Reviews Summary

Reviews for Sidewinder Canyon are mixed, with some finding it a highlight of their Death Valley trip due to its unique slot canyons and geological formations, while others found it boring and poorly marked. The extreme heat and lack of clear trails are common criticisms, but those who prepared well often rave about the adventure.

"Super boring hike. Nothing is properly marked—there are some arrows made of stones that supposed to mark the right path and canyon entrances. We were just walking for miles in the scorching sun on this sandy gravel which makes walking super hard to find some small boring canyons. This was the only area in Death Valley that I didn’t like. Waste of time."

Alexandra Dékány

"Super nice narrow slot canyon through conglomerate rock. quite narrow in places, and a bit dark in the beginning. Several choke stones require easy scrambling to surpass. The canyon has some very cool twists and turns and looking up reveals sinuous curves of carved rock. Stay in the wide wash until you get to the very cave-like entrance on the right. This canyon was the highlight of my trip!"

To the left in this shot are the majestic foothills and slopes of Telescope Peak, elevation 11,049 ft (3,368 m). This was one of my absolute favorite hikes I have been on in the park. It is definitely a more advanced trail and you should bring lots of water and a flashlight for exploring the slots."

Exploring the Slot Canyons

Sidewinder Canyon is renowned for its impressive slot canyons, which are narrow passages carved by water over millennia. These geological wonders offer a unique hiking experience, with tight squeezes and sinuous curves of rock. Reviewers often highlight Slots 1, 2, and 3 as must-see destinations within the canyon. Slot 1, in particular, can be quite narrow and dark, requiring a flashlight or headlamp for exploration. InstagramReddit

Navigating to these slots requires attention. The main wash should be followed until you spot cave-like entrances on the right. Look for rock stacks that serve as informal markers for the canyon entrances. Be prepared for some scrambling over rocks and boulders to access and move through these formations. The experience is often described as otherworldly, with the carved rock creating a sense of being inside a natural sculpture. InstagramReddit

Pro Tip: Downloading an offline map is essential, as the trail is not marked. Many visitors recommend the AllTrails app for guidance. InstagramReddit The effort to find and explore these slots is consistently described as totally worth the hike and heat by those who do. Reddit

Navigating the Unmarked Trail

One of the most frequently mentioned aspects of Sidewinder Canyon is its lack of marked trails. This can be a significant challenge for visitors, leading some to describe it as a 'hiking fail' if unprepared. Instagram The primary path is a wide wash, and the entrances to the slot canyons are often subtle, marked only by small piles of stones or rock stacks. Reddit

To successfully navigate, downloading an offline map is paramount. Many hikers rely on apps like AllTrails, which provide detailed routes and user-generated tips. InstagramReddit Without a map, it's easy to wander aimlessly in the vast desert landscape, potentially missing the most rewarding parts of the canyon. Reddit

Key Takeaway: Don't underestimate the importance of navigation. Arriving with a reliable offline map and understanding that you'll be following a wash and looking for subtle markers will greatly enhance your experience and prevent frustration. InstagramReddit

Visitors are strongly advised to carry at least one gallon of water per person and to wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. TikTokInstagram+1

The best times to visit are during the cooler months of the year, typically from October to April.
