The Kentucky State Capitol is closing for the first major renovation in 70 years. From this office, we’ve faced unprecedented challenges – a global pandemic and the worst natural disasters of my lifetime – while also creating tens of thousands of new jobs at record wages, expanding health care and more to make life better for Kentucky families. While the change of office is bittersweet, the work...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Kentucky State Capitol's stunning Beaux-Arts architecture, particularly the grand rotunda and intricate stonework. Many enjoyed self-guided tours and the unique features like the chapel. However, upcoming multi-year renovations starting August 2025 mean the building will be closed, impacting future visits.

"This is the 24th state/provincial capitol building we have visited and glad we did today. Effective August 19, 2025, the building will be closed for a multi-year renovation - call before visiting! A beautiful building is in need of some tender loving care and most of the displays and furniture were packed up and scaffolding up on the exterior. But the soul of the building is beautiful. Did a self-guided tour and basically had the building to ourselves."

"We traveled to Frankfort, Kentucky with Buffalo Trace as one of our destinations, but we arrived early and decided to explore. We ended up at the capital. Walked around the grounds but couldn't find an entrance for visitors, despite the fact that visitors were supposed to be allowed to visit. Perhaps another time."

"Amazing architecture. Most exquisite materials. Such incredible stonework. Internal views of rotunda and hallways are spectacular. I tried to capture all this in photos but you really have to see it in person."

Architectural Grandeur

The Kentucky State Capitol is a magnificent example of Beaux-Arts architecture, designed by renowned architect Frank Miles Day and completed in 1910. Its imposing structure and opulent interiors were intended to symbolize Kentucky's prosperity and importance. The building features a grand central rotunda, adorned with intricate stonework and a soaring dome, which houses a prominent statue of Abraham Lincoln, a native Kentuckian. Instagram

The use of high-quality materials, such as marble and granite, throughout the building contributes to its lasting beauty and durability. Visitors often remark on the spectacular internal views of the rotunda and hallways, noting that photos, while impressive, don't fully capture the scale and detail. Reddit

Beyond the main rotunda, the Capitol boasts other notable features like a chapel, a unique amenity among state capitols, and beautifully landscaped grounds. The floral clock on the exterior is a particular point of pride, meticulously maintained by the landscaping team. Instagram

A Hub of Government and History

As the seat of Kentucky's government, the Kentucky State Capitol is where legislative sessions, executive offices, and judicial proceedings take place. It has been the backdrop for significant political events and debates throughout its history. TikTokInstagram

The building itself is a historical artifact, and its preservation is a key concern. The Old State Capitol in Frankfort, though no longer in use for government, is also a significant historical site managed by the Kentucky Historical Society, which recently addressed a partial ceiling collapse there due to moisture damage. Instagram

Recent events have highlighted the Capitol's role in public discourse, with protests and rallies occurring within its vicinity concerning various legislative matters. TikTokInstagram This underscores its function not just as a government building but as a public space where citizens engage with their representatives.

Planning Your Visit Amidst Renovations

During the renovation period, access to the building will be significantly limited, and tours may be suspended or altered. It is crucial to contact the Capitol directly or check their official website for the most up-to-date information regarding opening status, tour availability, and any public access points before planning a trip.
