Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the historical significance and the beautiful memorial plaza dedicated to the lost Old Man of the Mountain. The stunning views of Profile Lake and the surrounding mountains are consistently praised, even though the original rock formation is no longer present. Some find the walk downhill and the presence of cyclists a minor inconvenience.

"It’s a steep walk down a hill and then a walk to view the old man on the mountain; you also have to deal with/ watch out for the people biking as they just fly by you without warning. There are a few stops along the way to the old man, an old cabin and viewing points. Down to view the old man they have these poles that you stand behind and it creates the old man so you can see what it looked like. Absolutely beautiful views of the Profile lake and the mountains. You can also fly fish at the lake. We went the first weekend in October around 330pm and it wasn’t too crowed."

Trisha

"We took my daughter and her fiance here yesterday. Though I grew up in NH my kids grew up in Oregon and never saw the old man when he was with us. Definitely a great memory of the old man of the mountain! ❤️"

BuddyL

"The rock formation is not there anymore. There is a sort of monument at the central plaza that replicates the view of where it once stood, but that's about it.
We had more fun taking pictures on a bridge that leads to nowhere, and enjoying the views."

The Legacy of the Old Man

The Old Man of the Mountain was a striking natural rock formation resembling a human profile, perched on the cliffs of Mount Cannon. For over a century, it served as New Hampshire's state symbol and a beloved landmark, drawing visitors from far and wide. Its image was even featured on state license plates and the state quarter. Instagram

The formation was composed of five granite blocks that, from a distance, perfectly mimicked a man's profile. Its exact geological origins are debated, but it's believed to have formed through glacial action and erosion over thousands of years. The Old Man of the Mountain Historic Site now stands as a testament to this lost natural wonder, preserving its memory through art and education. Instagram

On May 3, 2003, after a period of concern about its stability, the Old Man of the Mountain tragically collapsed. This event marked the end of an era for New Hampshire, but the spirit of the Old Man lives on. The Profile Plaza at the historic site allows visitors to stand in the exact viewing spot and see a replicated profile, offering a poignant connection to the past. Reddit

Experiencing the Site Today

Visiting the Old Man of the Mountain Historic Site today is a journey through memory and natural beauty. The experience begins with a walk from the parking area, which leads you downhill towards the viewing areas. Along the path, you'll encounter interpretive signs and exhibits that detail the history of the Old Man, its cultural significance, and the geological forces that shaped it. Instagram

The highlight for many is the Profile Plaza, where strategically placed 'profilers' (metal structures) align with the cliff face to recreate the iconic profile. This allows visitors to visualize what the Old Man looked like and understand why it was so cherished. Beyond the memorial, the site offers breathtaking panoramic views of Profile Lake and the surrounding peaks of the White Mountains. Reddit

Travelers often note the beauty of the natural surroundings, with some recommending a visit in the fall for vibrant foliage or in winter for a serene, snow-dusted landscape. While the natural formation is gone, the site provides a meaningful and scenic experience, blending history with the enduring majesty of Franconia Notch. Reddit
