What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Artist's Bluff is a highly praised hike in Franconia Notch State Park, celebrated for its breathtaking panoramic views of Echo Lake and the surrounding mountains, especially during the vibrant fall foliage season. While the trail is relatively short and moderately challenging, visitors often note its extreme popularity, leading to significant crowds and potential delays, particularly on weekends and during peak autumn colors.
"This trail, a beloved gem in Franconia Notch State Park (and all of New Hampshire), is a favorite among hikers for its unique charm and breathtaking views.
With ample parking in the northern Cannon Mountain lot, this trail is a breeze to navigate. The vantage point of Franconia Ridge and the notch is a sight to behold, making the journey all the more rewarding.
The eastern viewpoint is the more visited vantage point of the two. The Western view requires a minor scramble, though.
Distance for the entire loop? Well, my GPS watch logged 2.8 miles, and AllTrails recorded 2.3 miles. 🤷♂️
I hiked this on 2/28; sorry for the late recording here. Conditions then were pretty slick; crampons were needed."

"We truly enjoyed hiking this trail—it was moderately challenging, but the breathtaking views made it all worth it!"

"Beautiful view and hike. Take the loop clockwise so that you're climbing down the steepest part instead of up (I think that's why there are mixed reviews on if this is a moderate or hard hike). Bald Mountain was beautiful too but harder (steeper) to get to. If you plan on going in the fall, be prepared for the place to be more packed than Disney World. I have never had to wait in a line on a hike but on this one we were stuck with probably close to a hundred people all trying to get up/down a narrow, steep climb. It more than doubled the amount of time that hike would've normally taken us."

The Magic of Fall Foliage at Artist's Bluff
However, this beauty comes with a significant caveat: crowds. Social media content and traveler reviews consistently highlight the overwhelming number of visitors during this time. Expect long lines on the trail and at the viewpoint, which can detract from the experience. To truly enjoy the fall colors with fewer people, aim for a very early weekday morning visit, ideally before sunrise.
If you're visiting during peak fall, be prepared for a busy but rewarding hike. The vibrant scenery is undeniably worth the effort, but managing expectations regarding crowds is crucial for a positive experience.
