"Goldstone deep space is awesome. They offer tours to the public but you need to make an appointment first. The site is huge, and it's in the desert so dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes. Lots of space goodies are given out to guests and it's a great opportunity to learn about space. Make sure you bring a government issued ID and the registration for your vehicle, you'll need both to enter the facility."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Deep Space Network (DSN)
Goldstone itself hosts several large antennas, with the Mars Station being the most prominent at 70 meters in diameter. These colossal dishes are engineered to pick up faint signals from billions of miles away. The recent addition of Deep Space Station 23 (DSS-23), a 34-meter antenna, further enhances the complex's capabilities, demonstrating ongoing investment in our ability to explore the cosmos.
Visitors who manage to tour the facility often express awe at the sheer scale and technological sophistication. The complex's role in missions like the Mars rovers, the James Webb Space Telescope, and the Voyager probes highlights its profound impact on space exploration and our understanding of the universe.
Visiting Goldstone: Practicalities and Challenges
For international visitors, the hurdles are even greater. Reviews indicate that foreign nationals typically need to be accompanied by an in-service Department of Defense (DOD) personnel, making spontaneous visits or tours for tourists nearly impossible. This restriction underscores the sensitive nature of the facility's operations. However, occasional events like 'Family Day' offer a rare opportunity for the public, including families, to experience the site.
When planning a visit, even if successful, remember that Goldstone is situated in a harsh desert environment. Visitors are strongly advised to wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers to accommodate temperature fluctuations, and carry ample water. Essential identification, such as a government-issued ID and vehicle registration, is mandatory for entry onto the base.
