Reviews Summary

Picture Canyon offers a unique blend of natural beauty and ancient history, with its petroglyphs and seasonal waterfall being major draws. While the easy trails and free admission are highly praised, some visitors note an unpleasant odor from a nearby facility that can detract from the experience on windy days.

"Another interesting site from yesterday's adventures was the Picture Canyon Historical Site not far from Walnut Canyon in Flagstaff. It had very nice hiking trails with some nice views, a very small waterfall, a wooden train trestle that really just looked like a couple of trees had fallen over and laid there, and apparently some petroglyphs that I never saw. Not exactly sure why it's historical but the lava rock aspect of the area is pretty cool.

"We had stopped hair on the drive back from meteor crater as we wanted to do some more exploring in the area plus we had seen that it was free and had petroglyphs.

It was quite weird driving in as they look like to be a water reclamation area and active minds or compost piles before you actually hit the parking area.

There are multiple trails so that you can go as far or short as you would like with minimal inclined change, nothing got my heart rate up.

At the beginning of the trail, there was a great trail map and an additional pamphlet with different species of ducks and birds that you could possibly see there. I do wish the pamphlet had photos of the animals but I understand the cost restrictions with that.

We ended up taking a few different trails and piercing them together so that we could see both petroglyph sites plus the waterfall. Honestly, the waterfall was bigger than I anticipated from the photos that I found on Google.

All in all it was a great little stop to be able to get out, stretch my legs and see some amazing ducks in the ponds."

"The trail offers beautiful scenery and a great short to medium hike. However, the experience is dampened by a strong, unpleasant smell from a nearby sewage plant or whatever it is(I’m not sure). On windy days, the odor carries far, affecting much of the walk. If you’re sensitive to smells, this might not be the best choice. Very sad, otherwise a great place."
