Memento Mori. The Latin phrase literally means “remember death”. It is a symbolic reminder that the inevitably of death is what gives our lives purpose and meaning. Throughout Abercorn Cemetery there are many graves dating as far back as the 17th Century. 🪦 #mementomori #stoic #stoicism #graveyard #gravestone #unusannus #markiplier #scotland #scottish #history #kilt #outlander #abercorn #highland...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find Memento Mori Cemetery to be a surprisingly beautiful and thought-provoking place, offering more than just a burial ground. The philosophical undertones of 'remember death' combined with the natural scenery and historical elements create a unique atmosphere for reflection. While some may find it somber, many appreciate its peacefulness and the opportunity for contemplation. TikTokReddit

"Google "memento mori".

My brother told me that this is the only cemetery in Connecticut with a slave buried in it. I'm pretty sure that's not true, but it intrigued me enough to go inside.

Spoiler alert: some of the coolest people have small, crumbling gravestones. That's in general. Here, there's an enormous old tree with a lot of gravestone fragments lain beside it, which is one of my favorite things to explore here (with my eyes).

It's a bigger setting than I thought it would be, and it's complete with gorgeous views of the land.

Many of the people buried here are devout Christians. My brother is the wisest seventeen-year-old person I have ever met. He's gentle and thoughtful and kind, like many devout Christians. He's also an atheist. He's respectful and quiet about it, but he believes most religious people are very misguided. I try to tell him that religion means different things to different people, and it takes different forms depending on place and time.

This was a great opportunity to remind him that Christians were different back then. Back then (whenever that was), in general, people had different views of what it means to be a good Christian. You can tell by reading the things that Christians wrote back then about faith, God, spirituality, philosophy, and just about anything in life.

I'm not a Christian either, but this was a great opportunity for me to reflect on spirituality. I think there's one true God, who takes many forms and many names. God created us, and by doing so, implicitly asked us, "Now what do you want to do?" We, as a whole, are still trying to figure out how to answer that question. With our actions, we're telling her that we're aggressive, destructive animals. Do you know what God is yet?

Someday, in the future, we'll know a hell of a lot more about her than we do now. We are her children, and we're still babies! Can a baby possibly understand why her parents created her? Can a baby understand why her parents love her? Why they have faith in her? Why they'll stick with her and keep believing in her no matter what? It will take a long time for a baby to figure out the answers to big "why" questions. Do you know what God is yet?

God is in everything and everyone, of course. God is strongly present in all rocks, most plants, many creatures, and precious few people. But god is in everyone, because we're a part of her. Okay, here it is, if you're ready: my God is

I hope to return for a closer look when the weather's nicer!
