What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the incredible panoramic views from Bickle Knob Observation Tower, calling it a 'top of the world' experience. The tower climb is generally manageable, and the scenic drive up the gravel road adds to the adventure. However, some caution that the tower's inspection sticker was expired, and the narrow access road requires careful driving. Fog and rain can significantly impact the visibility of the stunning vistas.
"Bickle Knob Observation Tower was gorgeous! The tower was a short walk from the small parking lot, and the view at the top was amazing. This tower wasn’t too bad to climb, it felt sturdy, and the climb was short. I will, however mention that the inspection sticker was expired in 2023, so climb with caution. This place was fairly busy when we visited on Saturday, so I recommend visiting through the week, if you want to visit without the crowd."

"Incredible view from the top!! You can see for miles in all directions! The road up is gravel and no guard rails, but is not overly bumpy, so as long as you drive at a slower pace its not bad."

"Well, its like 4 miles up a dirt/gravel road to the top where this observation tower is but for being off-road it was really well taken care of, not much as far as holes go. Once we got to the top...it got foggy, but we were fighting on and off rain our entire trip. Otherwise I think it would of been a nice view. Instead we just climbed it and freed the American flag so it could fly freely in the wind agian! Once we hit the bottom of the 4 mile road you could see it started clearing up. Still worth it."

Navigating the Gravel Road
It's highly recommended to check the weather conditions before heading up. Dry conditions make the gravel road much easier to traverse. If it has rained recently, the road can become muddy and more challenging. Some visitors have noted that the road seemed better maintained than expected for an off-road path, but caution is always advised. The parking area at the top is quite small, typically fitting only about six vehicles, so arriving early or visiting on a weekday is a good strategy to secure a spot.
Key Takeaways for the Road:
* Drive Slow: Essential for safety and vehicle care.
* Check Weather: Dry conditions are preferable.
* Consider Vehicle: Higher clearance can be beneficial.
* Arrive Early: To secure limited parking.
The Tower Experience: Views and Vertigo
When the weather cooperates, the views are described as incredible and breathtaking, especially during the fall when the foliage is in full display. However, fog and rain can significantly obscure the vistas, as one reviewer experienced, turning a potentially stunning view into a misty, limited outlook. This highlights the importance of checking weather forecasts before your visit. Even with less-than-ideal weather, the experience of being atop the tower and the sheer scale of the surrounding wilderness can be awe-inspiring.
Tower Highlights:
* 360-Degree Views: Unobstructed vistas of the Appalachian Mountains.
* Height: Offers a unique perspective from 4,012 feet.
* Sturdy Construction: Generally feels safe, though an expired inspection sticker was noted.
* Seasonal Beauty: Particularly stunning during fall foliage season.
