What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Kentuck Knob as a stunning and less-crowded alternative to Fallingwater, highlighting its beautiful integration with nature and the insightful tours. While some note the restriction on interior photography, most find the experience of exploring the Usonian home and its grounds to be deeply rewarding and architecturally significant.
"Highly recommend booking a full tour in advance, it’s totally worth the extra cost! We went in October to celebrate our anniversary and although it was our third tour, there’s always something new to see and experience. The love the guides have for this home and its people carries over in their enthusiasm and details they bring out and their knowledge of its history and information surrounding Mr Wright. Always a pleasure to visit and beautiful in every season. Make it a point to dress for the weather so you don’t miss out on walking the grounds and taking in the sculpture gardens as well! Lord Palumbo has quite an eclectic collection and it’s a fun walk back from the house."

"Excellent tour. The guide was awesome with lots of information. The house is very unique and the tour guide points out so many interesting facts. I lost my sunglasses during the tour and called to see if they were found. The tour guide found them, texted me, and kept them in her office until I could return at the end of the day. She went above and beyond and I appreciate that. Be sure to stop by this lesser know FLW home on the area, but is still quite worth the time. Views are beautiful"

"Seeing Kentuck Knob was great. Like the other Frank Lloyd Wright designs I have visited, it was a delight. Learning about the Hagans (the original owners) and then Peter Palumbo (the current owner) and their motivations for owning a Wright home was a bonus. The surrounding landscape--the hills and sculptures and the farther vistas across the Laurel Highlands--was equally enjoyable. The only disappointment was not being able to photograph the interiors of Kentuck Knob, hence my 4/5 stars rating."

Deep Dives
In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian Vision
Unlike his more elaborate commissions, Usonian homes emphasized simplicity and efficiency. Kentuck Knob features extensive use of local stone and cypress wood, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The design prioritizes natural light and ventilation, further enhancing the sense of harmony with nature. Visitors often remark on how the house feels like an extension of the hill it sits upon, a testament to Wright's principle of organic architecture.
The Hagan family, for whom the house was built, were friends of the Kaufmann family (owners of Fallingwater), and Wright applied similar design principles to both properties, albeit with different scales and approaches. Exploring Kentuck Knob offers a unique insight into Wright's democratic design ideals and his enduring influence on modern architecture.
Exploring the Grounds and Sculpture Garden
A highlight of the grounds is the sculpture garden, which features a diverse collection of artworks thoughtfully placed within the natural setting. These sculptures add an artistic dimension to the landscape, inviting contemplation and discovery as you wander. The gardens are particularly stunning in the spring, with an estimated 60,000 daffodils planted by the owner, creating a breathtaking display of color.
Many visitors recommend taking the trail back down from the house to the gift shop, as it offers a more immersive experience of the property's natural beauty. The stone path is well-maintained, but wearing appropriate footwear is advised. The trails provide a peaceful way to conclude your visit, allowing you to fully appreciate the serene environment Wright intended.
