Reviews Summary

The Porter Rockwell Trail is a popular spot for runners and walkers, praised for its scenic nature and open spaces. However, cyclists often find it frustrating due to numerous road crossings and train track barriers, making it less ideal for biking compared to other local trails. Reddit

"Nice trail for running and biking!"

Oliver Smith

"This is not a very good bike path. In fact, it might be the worst bike path in the Salt Lake Valley. At most road crossings, you have to stop, wait for the light, and then get your bike around the train/pedestrian gates. Getting past the pedestrian gates and over the tracks isn't always easy, or even possible if you're towing a trailer. To make things worse, the trail has several gaps and no signage on where (or if) it resumes. Overall, the Porter Rockwell trail is just nowhere near as bike friendly as the Jordan River or Mountain View trails."

Navigating the Porter Rockwell Trail: A Cyclist's Perspective

For cyclists, the Porter Rockwell Trail presents a mixed experience. While it offers a route through scenic landscapes, several aspects can be frustrating. The trail is frequently interrupted by road crossings, requiring cyclists to stop, wait for traffic signals, and navigate pedestrian gates and train tracks. The History Behind the Name: Orrin Porter Rockwell

The Porter Rockwell Trail is named after Orrin Porter Rockwell, a significant and often controversial figure in early Utah history. Known as 'The Destroying Angel of Mormondom' and sometimes compared to Samson, Rockwell was a bodyguard and trusted associate of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. TikTok Smith reportedly prophesied that no harm would befall Rockwell as long as he didn't cut his hair, a belief that contributed to his distinctive appearance. TikTok

Rockwell was involved in numerous events during the westward expansion of the Latter-day Saints, including periods of conflict and settlement. His life was marked by both loyalty and a reputation for violence, making him a legendary, albeit sometimes feared, character in the region's lore. TikTok While the trail itself is a modern recreational path, its name serves as a reminder of the historical figures and events that shaped the landscape of Utah. Some online discussions touch upon the historical context, with a few referencing Rockwell's complex legacy. TikTok
