Reviews Summary

The Des Plaines River Trail is praised for its extensive length and blend of paved and natural paths, offering a great escape for biking, hiking, and wildlife viewing. However, frequent noise from O'Hare Airport and inconsistent signage are noted drawbacks that can impact the immersive nature experience.

"The Des Plaines River Trail is very beautiful. It is a great trail for walking, jogging, hiking, biking, and equestrians. There are side-trails with ramps and turns along the main trail that mostly bikers use. The trail is very peaceful."

"A decent trail, but the proximity to O’Hare International Airport results in extreme noise pollution (and I say this as a real aviation lover). You’ll have planes starting or landing over your head literally every minute - there’s just no feeling of being immersed in nature at all, even on the most beautiful day of summer. Also, signage is almost non-existent.

That being said, it is still very nice and commendable to have a bigger patch of green in this (sub-)urban setting, and our sightings of deer, otter, and a fabulous cecropia moth made for a nice hike despite the aforementioned noise."

"The Des Plaines River Trail is awesome! If you like more of a natural trail. This is the one you have to check out in the Chicago land area. It goes from North Avenue all the way up to Wisconsin. Anyone who is a big biker and wants to do long distance should check out this trail. Highly recommend for biking enthusiasts! Just a heads up, there are no water fountains along the path. Some of the spots can be tricky to figure out when crossings busy intersections and trying to figure out where the trail meets again at certain sections. The all trails map can be very helpful when riding the Des Plaines River Trail."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Des Plaines River Trail offers a great opportunity for families to connect with nature. The paved sections are perfect for strollers and young cyclists, providing a safe and smooth surface. Keep an eye out for wildlife sightings, which are always a hit with children – deer and birds are common. Remember to pack plenty of snacks and water, as amenities are limited. Consider using a trail map app to help navigate, especially if you plan to explore some of the more natural, less-marked paths. Reddit

While the trail is generally accessible, some of the unpaved, natural sections might be challenging for very young children or those with mobility aids. Stick to the paved paths for an easier experience. The noise from O'Hare Airport is a factor, but the chance to see deer or other animals can often outweigh this for younger visitors. It's a good option for a family outing that combines activity with a touch of nature.

🚴‍♀️ Dedicated Cyclists

For serious cyclists, the Des Plaines River Trail is a dream. Its extensive length, stretching from North Avenue all the way to Wisconsin, makes it ideal for long-distance rides. The mix of paved and natural surfaces means you can tailor your ride. The paved sections offer a smooth, fast experience, while the natural trails provide a more challenging, off-road adventure. Reddit

Be aware that some sections can be tricky to navigate, so a reliable GPS device or mapping app is highly recommended. Also, remember to carry sufficient water and snacks, as services are sparse. While the trail is popular, weekday mornings tend to be less crowded, offering a more uninterrupted cycling experience. The potential for plane noise near O'Hare is a trade-off for the convenience of this long, accessible trail system. Reddit

🚶‍♀️ Hikers and Nature Lovers

Hikers will appreciate the natural, wooded sections of the Des Plaines River Trail, which offer a more immersive experience in nature. These unpaved paths are perfect for exploring at a slower pace and enjoying the flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for deer, birds, and other wildlife that call this trail home. Reddit

While the trail is beautiful, be prepared for the noise from O'Hare Airport, which can be significant in certain areas. Bring a good pair of walking shoes suitable for varied terrain and pack plenty of water. Using a trail map app is advisable, as signage can be minimal. The trail's length allows for both short walks and longer day hikes, making it a versatile option for nature enthusiasts.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Trail's Terrain

The Des Plaines River Trail is a dynamic route that offers a varied experience depending on where you are. Through urban centers like downtown Des Plaines, you'll find a well-maintained paved path, ideal for casual strolls, jogging, and road biking. This section provides pleasant views of the river and its banks. As you venture further north or south, the trail transitions into more natural, unpaved surfaces. These sections are often more rugged, featuring dirt paths, gravel, and occasional roots, making them perfect for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. It's important to choose your activity and footwear based on the terrain you intend to cover. Reddit

Navigating these different terrains can be part of the adventure. While the paved sections are straightforward, the natural parts might include side trails that are popular with dedicated bikers. Be aware of your surroundings and the type of user you might encounter. The trail's length means you can tailor your experience, opting for a smooth ride or a more challenging trek through nature. Reddit

Wildlife and Nature Encounters

Despite its urban setting, the Des Plaines River Trail is a haven for wildlife. Many visitors report sightings of deer grazing peacefully, and some have even spotted otters along the riverbanks. The diverse birdlife is also a significant draw for nature enthusiasts and photographers. Keep your eyes peeled for various species of birds, especially in the more wooded and marshy areas. Reddit

While the trail offers a valuable green space, it's important to manage expectations regarding immersion in nature. The proximity to O'Hare International Airport means that plane noise is a frequent occurrence, which can sometimes detract from the tranquility. However, many visitors find that the beauty of the natural surroundings and the thrill of spotting wildlife make the experience worthwhile, even with the occasional overhead aircraft. Reddit

Navigating and Amenities

The sheer length of the Des Plaines River Trail can be both a blessing and a challenge. While it offers endless possibilities for exploration, signage can be inconsistent, especially at intersections where the trail meets roads or other paths. Many users recommend using a trail map application on your smartphone to help navigate and ensure you stay on the intended route. This is particularly helpful when trying to reconnect with the trail after crossing busy intersections. Reddit

When it comes to amenities, be prepared. Water fountains are scarce along the trail, so carrying an ample supply of water is essential for any outing, whether you're hiking or biking. Restroom facilities are also limited and typically found only at larger park areas or designated trailheads. Planning your stops and carrying necessary supplies will ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable experience on the trail. Reddit
