Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Del Norte County Historical Society Museum incredibly informative and packed with local history, especially appreciating the unique setting within the old jail. However, some are put off by the immediate and direct request for donations upon entry, and a few note that certain sensitive historical topics are presented without adequate context.

"The museum was very informative of local history, but we were a little put off by them requesting money as soon as we walked in the door. It was posted in several places the suggested donation amount, as they run off of donations, but immediately after walking in the door we were approached by a woman saying we owed $5/adult and $1/child and held out her hand waiting for the money. We had planned on donating $20, but after being approached as if we owed them for visiting, we only “donated” the amount she told us too. Probably won’t visit again because of this."

"It's hard to describe and a true treasure. I could spend a week exploring it. Not a 5 star because there is some very disturbing history presented without much context or awareness. It's a lot and I can only imagine the impact on a person with Asian or Native American or Black identity. The staff were kind and full of stories about the historic shipwreck. I hope they embrace additional curation to bring more transparency and accountability to this truly special collection."

Suzanne Beigel

"Local home-town museum. Lots to look at. Probably too much! Some displays are really well-done (especially the fresnel lens). Others are somewhat hodgepodge, but that's typical of a home-town museum. They even use the space in jail cells for display. A few of the displays are not easy to see because you are blocked off, or the display is behind reflective glass or behind jail cell bars. But for the price, this is a pretty nice museum."

The Historic Jailhouse Setting

The Del Norte County Historical Society Museum holds a unique distinction: it's housed within the former Del Norte County Jail, built in 1926. This architectural choice provides an immediate sense of history and context for the artifacts displayed within. Visitors can explore exhibits set up inside the actual jail cells, offering a tangible connection to the past and the lives of those who were once incarcerated there. This unusual setting adds a layer of intrigue and authenticity to the museum experience, making it more than just a collection of objects but a journey through time within a historic structure. InstagramReddit

This setting also presents some challenges. Some displays are viewed through jail cell bars or behind reflective glass, which can make viewing and photography difficult. However, for many, this adds to the charm and historical immersion. The volunteers often share stories about the jail's history alongside the museum's exhibits, further enriching the visitor's understanding of the building's dual purpose. Reddit

Navigating Sensitive Historical Content

While the museum is celebrated for its extensive collection of local history, some visitors have noted that certain exhibits present disturbing historical events without sufficient context or sensitivity. This can be particularly impactful for individuals with backgrounds related to the events depicted, such as Asian, Native American, or Black communities. Reddit

It's important for visitors to be aware that the museum's collection reflects the full spectrum of local history, including its more challenging aspects. The staff are described as kind and knowledgeable, but the curation of these sensitive topics may benefit from additional context and accountability. Visitors are encouraged to approach these exhibits with an open mind and to engage with the staff if they have questions or concerns. Reddit

The Role of Volunteers

The Del Norte County Historical Society Museum is largely maintained and operated by a dedicated group of volunteers. These individuals are passionate about local history and play a crucial role in creating exhibits, preserving artifacts, and sharing their knowledge with visitors. Reddit

Engaging with the volunteers is highly recommended. They are often a treasure trove of information, offering personal anecdotes and deeper insights into the exhibits that go beyond what's written on the display cards. Their enthusiasm and commitment are a significant part of what makes the museum a special place to visit. Reddit
