What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the beautiful and serene trails at Snow Mountain Ranch Cowiche Uplands, praising the variety of options for all hiking levels and the stunning wildflower displays. The peaceful atmosphere and opportunity for a 'choose your own hike' experience are highly valued. However, the lack of shade on higher trails makes summer visits challenging due to intense heat.
"Went to do the wildflower hike today. It was beautiful 😍. It was also hot! It is better in my opinion, to go early in the morning. I started my hike at 130. The trail can be as hard as you want it. If you stay on the lower loop it is mostly flat. I recommend this trail for a easy day hike outside Yakima. Then go to cowichee brewing and have a cold one 😉. My go to is the farmers way IPA. They have a couple ciders as well."

"One of the most beautiful and serene trail.
There are 6 trails, with very easy hike to difficult one. Perfect for all kind of hikers. It has this wild and raw feeling, which is seldom now a days. We just saw 2 people, that too, from far and on different trail.
It was a cloudy day with little bit drizzling, and sun playing hide and seek; a perfect weather for hike with my sweetheart.
Loved it so much that we want to go there again."

Navigating the Trail Network
When planning your route, consider the terrain and sun exposure. The higher trails offer breathtaking vistas but lack shade, making them best suited for cooler parts of the day or season. Conversely, the trails near the creek provide a welcome respite from the sun, with mature trees offering a shaded canopy. This variety ensures that every visitor can find a path that suits their preferences and energy levels.
It's wise to familiarize yourself with a trail map before you go, as the interconnectedness can be disorienting for first-time visitors. Many hikers recommend taking the east trail up and the west trail down for a more manageable ascent and descent, though personal preference may vary.
Best Times for Wildflowers and Wildlife
While wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, the area is home to various species. Keep an eye out for small lizards darting across the paths and a variety of birdlife. A word of caution: rattlesnakes inhabit the area, especially during warmer months. It's crucial to stay on marked trails and be aware of your surroundings to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Beyond spring, the fall months offer pleasant hiking temperatures and beautiful autumn colors, making it another excellent time to explore the uplands. Summer, while offering long daylight hours, can be extremely hot with minimal shade, so early morning or late evening hikes are strongly advised during this period.
Essential Hiking Preparations
Comfortable and sturdy hiking footwear is essential, as some trails can be rocky or steep. Consider bringing hiking poles for added stability, particularly on descents. Sun protection is also paramount; a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are non-negotiable for summer visits.
For those interested in photography, a camera is a must to capture the scenic beauty. It's also advisable to carry a small first-aid kit for minor scrapes or blisters. Finally, always inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time, especially if venturing out alone.
