"Lionel came down on a day when it was closed with his daughter Allison. They were very gracious and he had lots of local knowledge about the paper and town. Very nice of him and my wife I very much appreciated it. Thanks Lionel and Allison."

Andrew Preble

"This is a wonderfully preserved letterpress print shop. This was the one-man shop of a newspaper — the Marshfield Sun — which was published weekly for over 50 years in Coos Bay. (It was also a general print shop, printing handbills, etc.) All of the original equipment has been preserved — in working order, no less!

The museum also has a collection of historic typewriters, as well as a fairly complete research archive of local newspapers.

The guide was wonderful: knowledgeable, friendly and interesting.

The museum also provides some hands-on demos for children. (I would guess an advance appointment would be called for for that.)"

"An truely amazing museum that rivals larger local history museums in the sheer depth it gives its subject. My wife and I talk about our visit to anyone that will listen. We're in our 30's and got a lot out of our trip"

The Art of Letterpress Printing

The Sun Printing Museum Marshfield is a living testament to the era of letterpress printing, a technique that dominated the industry for centuries. This method involves setting individual metal or wooden letters and punctuation marks into a composing stick to form words, lines, and paragraphs. These composed lines are then locked into a frame called a forme, inked, and pressed onto paper using a printing press. The result is a tactile, slightly embossed impression that is distinct from modern printing methods. Visitors can witness this intricate process firsthand, appreciating the skill and labor involved in producing newspapers and other printed materials before the advent of digital technology. Reddit

Many visitors are struck by the sheer amount of original equipment preserved within the museum. From the imposing Gutenberg-style presses to the smaller jobbing presses used for handbills and flyers, the collection showcases the evolution of printing technology. The museum also houses a significant archive of local newspapers, offering a unique window into the community's history, events, and daily life over decades. This collection, alongside vintage typewriters, provides a comprehensive look at the communication tools of the past. Reddit
