What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the friendly and knowledgeable staff, the authentic experience of riding historic steam trains, and the well-maintained locomotives. The scenic routes and the fascinating turntable demonstration are also frequently highlighted as enjoyable aspects. Some guests found the experience a bit pricey for the duration of shorter rides, and a few noted that onboard restrooms might not be functional.
"We had a wonderful experience at TN Valley Railroad! It was a dreary, rainy day and decided to go on the Missionary Ridge tour. It was perfect! We got there half an hour early, but the train left right on schedule. The guys working our train were kind, friendly, funny, and very knowledgeable about the railroad. We had a choice between an air conditioned car, or one with fresh (window) air. We chose the fresh air, windows down. Choose this, if the weather is nice! The rain cleared long enough for us to see the turntable demonstration and to walk over and see the other locomotives that were being repaired. It was all in all the best first train ride and tour we could have asked for. We will be returning in the coming months with our children. We hope to try the deli next time around because it looked fantastic! We had already eaten and didn’t know they had one in the station. The gift shop was great also! Lots to choose from, affordable and very friendly. The pictures definitely don’t do it justice!"

I recommend this to everyone who wants to experience a little nostalgia and some history. A++++"

"1st time at the TVRM and their Founders day celebration. Friendly and inviting atmosphere. I took the Missionary Ridge ride and thoroughly enjoyed it. I will be back for one of their Holiday excursions. I also participated in their night time shoot and loved the various train scenes. Everyone was so friendly and am very pleased with the results."

The Thrill of Steam: Locomotive Power
Many visitors are drawn to the museum specifically for the chance to ride behind a real steam engine. The 'Copperhill Special' and 'Chickamauga Turn' excursions are particularly popular for showcasing the power and beauty of these historic trains as they traverse scenic landscapes. The 'Missionary Ridge Local' also frequently features steam power, providing a shorter but equally engaging experience. The roar of the engine, the puff of steam, and the rhythmic chugging create an unforgettable atmosphere that transports you back in time.
The museum's commitment extends beyond just running trains; it involves meticulous restoration and maintenance. The railyard at East Chattanooga is a hub of activity where these giants are cared for. Witnessing this ongoing work adds another layer of appreciation for the dedication required to keep these pieces of history alive and running. It’s a testament to the passion of the staff and volunteers who ensure these locomotives continue to inspire awe.
Excursion Options: Finding Your Perfect Ride
For a more immersive experience, consider the longer day trips. The 'Chickamauga Turn' takes passengers from Chattanooga to Chickamauga, Georgia, offering a journey through different landscapes and a chance to explore a new destination. Similarly, the 'Copperhill Special' departs from Delano, Tennessee, and winds through the picturesque Hiwassee River Gorge, especially stunning during the fall foliage season. These longer rides provide a more in-depth experience of rail travel and the surrounding scenery.
Beyond the regular excursions, the museum also hosts special events and themed rides throughout the year, such as holiday trains or specific historical reenactments. It's always worth checking their official website, tvrail.com, for the most current schedule, pricing, and descriptions of all available excursions. A Journey Through History: The Civil War Connection
The museum itself plays a role in preserving this history by operating trains that would have been in use during or shortly after the Civil War period. The locomotives and railcars are not just exhibits; they are functional pieces of history that bring the past to life. The commentary provided by the conductors and guides often includes historical anecdotes, further enriching the experience and connecting the journey to its historical context.
While the primary focus is on the railroad's evolution, the historical context of the routes adds a compelling layer to the visitor experience. It’s a chance to see the landscape through the eyes of those who traveled it over a century ago, understanding how railroads shaped the development and defense of the region.
