What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally praise Don Robinson State Park for its beautiful and varied hiking trails, particularly the Sandstone Canyon Trail, with its interesting rock formations and creek. The park is appreciated for its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty, especially during spring wildflowers and fall foliage. Some reviews note that certain canyon areas are inaccessible and that restroom facilities are limited.
"Fantastic. Great trails that just the right length too. 3 parking lots means you'll have no issues finding a spot. Moderate hiking with plenty of elevation changes. Lots of rocks and switchbacks to keep you interested. Barely any water features, but we are having a bit of a drought though."
The Great Satan
"there are 2 trails, both with very nice features. The Sandstone Canyon trail does not allow access to the deepest canyon in Missouri because the trail use had eroded the bank too much. The Canyon trail does go by some sandstone palisades and rock shelters, and there are some very nice creeks. That trail is 4 miles long , with frequent changes in altitude. There are some cut-offs for those wanted a more limited experience. The flowers in Spring are quite good."

"Sandstone Canyon is one of my all-time favorite hikes. The varied topography and meandering creek give this trail bit of a storybook feel."

Exploring the Trails: Sandstone Canyon vs. LaBarque Hills
For those seeking a shorter or less strenuous option, the LaBarque Hills Trail provides a 2.6-mile loop. While it offers a different perspective of the park's scenery, it's generally considered more accessible for beginners and families. Both trails are well-marked, ensuring a safe and enjoyable hiking experience. Remember to wear appropriate footwear, as some sections can be dusty or muddy depending on the weather.
Pro Tip: Some reviews mention that the deepest canyon access is restricted due to erosion, and certain caves may be blocked off. However, the beauty of the palisades, shelters, and creek remains a significant draw for visitors.
Seasonal Beauty: Spring Wildflowers and Fall Foliage
As autumn arrives, the park transforms into a breathtaking display of fall foliage. The diverse tree species create a rich tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows, making it an ideal destination for scenic drives and hikes. The cooler temperatures during fall also make for very pleasant hiking conditions.
While summer offers lush greenery, it can also be hot and humid. Winter can bring a unique charm with potential for frozen waterfalls and a quiet, serene atmosphere, though some trails might be wet or muddy.
