Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the spectacular, breathtaking views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains from the Skywalk. The connection between the historic homes of Thomas Cole and Frederic Church is a major draw, offering a rich blend of art, history, and natural beauty. While some mention bridge traffic noise and potential challenges for those with a fear of heights, the overall experience is highly praised as a picturesque and enriching outing.

"Spectacular view of the Catskill mountains. Adventurous seeing the river and islands below. You compare a little history to are Bridge authority area. Picturesque. We walked from the Thomas Cole home to Olana"

RekhaMari Kumar

"The view from this bridge has always been spectacular and now that the walkway was put in a few years ago, it makes it easier to see the views. It also connects Thomas Cole House with Olana. There's also a wonderful winery (Whitecliff) on the Columbia side of the bridge. Nice place to take a walk /hike. Cloudy days can impede the views."

Vin B

"The Hudson River Skywalk is a beautiful walkway that connects the historic houses of artists Thomas Cole and Frederic Church. The best part of the walkway goes over the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. The views of the Hudson River below bridge are breathtaking. Walking towards Cole's house you can see some great views of the Catskill Mountains. If you walk towards Frederic Church's Olana you can see some nice views of this terrific estate. The walkway lane is fairly wide and is protected by a wall from traffic.
There are parking areas on either side of the bridge that are easily accessed. You do not need pay the toll to go over the bridge, if you simply want to use the walkway. The trail is three miles one way or six miles out and back. If you have a fear of heights, walking over the bridge can be challenging.
Traffic near the walkway over the bridge can be a bit loud, but it is not bad. If you have time, plan to go to either Church's House (Olana) or Thomas Cole's House. If you're not interested in the houses the walk itself is still very nice!"

Connecting Art and Landscape: The Hudson River School

The Hudson River Skywalk is more than just a scenic bridge walk; it's a journey through the heart of the Hudson River School, America's first major art movement. This artistic tradition celebrated the sublime beauty of the American landscape, and the very views you'll experience from the Skywalk inspired artists like Thomas Cole and Frederic Church. Cole, considered the founder, established his home and studio in Catskill, while Church, his most famous student, built his magnificent estate, Olana, across the river. Walking the Skywalk allows you to literally tread the same ground and see the same vistas that fueled their creative genius. Reddit

Visiting Thomas Cole National Historic Site offers a glimpse into the artist's life and work, showcasing his studios and the environment that shaped his iconic paintings. Across the river, Olana State Historic Site is a masterpiece in itself, designed by Church as a total work of art, blending his travels and artistic vision. The Skywalk acts as a physical and symbolic bridge between these two titans of American art, offering a unique opportunity to understand their connection and the landscape that defined their legacy. Reddit

For those interested in art history or simply appreciating the profound connection between nature and creativity, dedicating time to explore these historic homes is highly recommended. The Skywalk provides the perfect prelude or epilogue to your artistic pilgrimage, allowing you to immerse yourself in the very scenery that inspired a nation's artistic awakening. TikTok

Navigating the Skywalk: Practicalities and Perspectives

The Hudson River Skywalk offers a unique pedestrian experience over the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, connecting the towns of Catskill and Greenport. The walkway itself is a dedicated lane separated from vehicle traffic by a sturdy wall, providing a sense of safety and unobstructed views. It's approximately 3 miles from one end of the bridge to the other, making it a substantial walk for those who choose to traverse its entire length. Many visitors opt to park at one historic site and walk to the other, creating a full-day excursion. Reddit

Accessibility is generally good, with a wide path suitable for strollers. However, individuals with a significant fear of heights might find the elevated position and the expanse of the river below a bit daunting. It's advisable to take your time, focus on the horizon, and perhaps walk with a companion. The noise from passing vehicles is present but often described as not overly intrusive, allowing for conversation and enjoyment of the scenery. Reddit

Parking is conveniently located on both sides of the bridge, with restrooms available during daylight hours. For those looking to extend their visit, the nearby Whitecliff Winery offers a pleasant spot for a tasting, and the towns of Catskill and Hudson provide charming options for dining and exploring local shops.
