Dragon's Tooth is a hidden bar in @rosewoodabudhabi restaurant @daipaidongad. Inspired by the 1920’s Shanghai Jazz revolution, the ambience is relaxed and the decor is widely leather seating giving a London pub like vibe. We opted for the cocktails and dimsums offer aptly priced at AED 75 and were blown away by the food and drinks. It's as if the drinks were specially and carefully curated for us,...

Reviews Summary

Hikers praise Dragon's Tooth for its challenging yet rewarding nature, offering stunning Blue Ridge Mountain views and unique rock formations. While the summit's narrowness requires caution, the overall experience is described as an amazing adventure, especially for those completing the Virginia Triple Crown. Some find the rock scrambles moderate, while others deem them strenuous.

"Perfect weather, great people on the trail & a very pretty woodland hiking spot. Happy to finally have some steps on the AT!!"

Brandy Douglas

"Great shorter hike. My garmin clocked just over 4 miles round trip. We started later in the afternoon. We finished just after sunset. The bottom half is a fairly easy hike. The top half has a few rock scrambles. The top is very cool, but if you goto the top of the rock.....be careful. It's narrow and probably not for novice or younger climbers.

I wrote moderate for the trail because I love the rock scrambles. Probably a 3.5 out of 5."

Steve Schweizer

"Dragon's Tooth Trail in Roanoke, Virginia, is an adventure you won't want to miss! I hiked it recently, and it was an amazing experience from start to finish.

The trail is a bit challenging, but the scenery makes it totally worth it. As you hike through the lush forest, you're surrounded by beautiful trees and the sounds of nature.

The rock formations along the way are fascinating, and they give the trail a unique character.
The highlight, of course, is reaching Dragon's Tooth. The massive rock formation juts out dramatically from the mountain, and the views from up there are simply breathtaking.

Climbing up the rocks to reach the summit is a bit of a scramble, but the sense of accomplishment and the panoramic views make it all worth it."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Virginia Triple Crown Challenge

Dragon's Tooth is one of the three iconic hikes that make up the Virginia Triple Crown. The other two are McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs. Completing all three is a significant achievement for many hikers, often tackled over a weekend or a few days. Each hike offers unique geological features and stunning vistas, showcasing the diverse beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Many hikers use Dragon's Tooth as a stepping stone to complete the entire challenge, often sharing tips on logistics and best routes for tackling all three. Instagram+1

Planning to conquer the Triple Crown requires careful consideration of transportation, accommodation, and the physical demands of each hike. Some opt for a shuttle service to connect the trailheads, while others prefer to drive and park at each location. The order in which you tackle them can also impact the experience, with some suggesting McAfee Knob first due to its popularity and accessibility. Regardless of the order, the reward is an unforgettable immersion in Virginia's natural splendor. Instagram

Navigating the Rock Scrambles

The rock scrambles are a defining feature of the Dragon's Tooth trail, particularly in the upper half. These sections involve using your hands and feet to ascend and descend over large boulders and rock formations. While exhilarating for experienced hikers, they can be challenging for those with less climbing experience or a fear of heights. It's crucial to wear sturdy hiking boots with good traction to maintain grip on the uneven surfaces. TikTokInstagram

When approaching the scrambles, take your time to assess the best handholds and footholds. If you're hiking with children, ensure they are closely supervised and assisted. The summit itself is a narrow rock spire, and while the views are spectacular, it's important to be extremely cautious and aware of your surroundings. Many hikers advise against going to the very top if you're not confident, as the edges are steep and exposed. InstagramReddit

Best Practices for a Sustainable Hike

As part of the Jefferson National Forest and the Appalachian Trail, practicing Leave No Trace principles is paramount at Dragon's Tooth. This means packing out everything you pack in, including all trash, food scraps, and even biodegradable items like fruit peels. Staying on marked trails helps prevent erosion and protects the delicate ecosystem. Instagram

Avoid disturbing wildlife and vegetation. When nature calls, be prepared to dig a cathole at least 200 feet away from water sources, trails, and campsites. By adhering to these guidelines, you help preserve the natural beauty of Dragon's Tooth for future generations of hikers to enjoy. Instagram
