Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Freeman Park's unique drive-on beach access, making it incredibly convenient for unloading gear and enjoying a personal spot by the ocean. The dog-friendly atmosphere and off-season off-leash opportunities are major highlights. While the lack of showers is a minor inconvenience, the overall experience, including camping and the pier amenities, is highly praised.

"This was such a cool find! There's beach access for vehicles as well as foot traffic. The prices for vehicles are $50 daily, on peak season, $30 off peak season. It doesn't cost to just walk onto the beach like I did. Dogs are allowed, on leashes. My girls loved it! The only downside to this place is that there are no showers to wash your feet off. That's my only complaint. Other than having sand all over us, our hearts were full!"

"When searching for a dog friendly place in the summer out here, it's hard to find (most ban dogs for certain hours -all day- totally understandable for the other beachgoers)...This was THE perfect place for a day at the beach with the pup (and the 4x4!). Ecstatic wouldn't even come close to our feelings of going to Freeman Beach. We drove hours to get there and it did not disappoint (but wait to read the reason for 4 stars).

We got there about an hour or so after opening and we thought it would be a very long line to get in. Nope. Not bad. A few trucks in front of us, a few trucks behind. It did get busy though all morning and even til early afternoon... Though the trucks kept coming and they had room to park!

The view is to die for. Parking (let alone driving on the sand on the way in) is divine. The vibe is family and all-day dog friendly with lots of kind people. The price of entry is something we'd pay again.

Porta pottys were plenty (the ones on the left with labels on them were useable and clean- the others I'm not sure...and didn't dare go on because those seemed sketchy). Pretty clean (in the morning) with TP. Quitting time they were your typical expectation. Bring sanitizer, I didn't notice any.

While we read that ONLY 4x4s are allowed, I saw a Jeep Cherokee, a small Toyota (think it was a Rav), and a couple other cars (a small Subaru wagon) that I knew were not 4x4s so we didn't understand that (they were parked towards the front of the beach driveway entrance) so it could be they are allowed but only so far? It gets deep, and it's bumpy, and they check your truck for confirmation before they let you in.

Listening to the kids giggle as their parents drove over the bumpy beach road was so cute. Seeing fishing poles, people stick their poles in the beach, sharing our pup with our neighbors who adored him ...I felt like we were at the drive-in theater. That's the vibe, just on the beach!💕

It was an outstanding experience!
People were cooking, tents were up, music playing in everyone's spots. (Just like you see when you're out camping at campgrounds.) Some boats passed by... beautiful colors of water.

Tides can get strong, but if you know you know. Be safe!

Not having to schlep all your beach gear, being able to sit in the back of your truck, park right at the beach spot you pick to set up. Nothing like it. 😁🏖️

When you park, know that there is a short drop off -each area is more steep than others- the folks next to us said the beach used to be bigger but washed away. Good idea to get a look first or have a spotter. No issues there that day with anyone rolling off the beach, thank God lol but just an FYI.

Be sure to read the facts/rules before going, bring your 🐕 poop bags and your sunblock, and you'll have a terrific time.

So why 4 stars? - it could've been 5 if the lady at the end didn't scold us so bad with her attitude about stopping on the drive out for 3 mins so that the passenger could pee at the porta potty before the hours ride home (while another truck had parked there way too close to the entrance, for what I don't know, on our way in- with no words spoken to them). So...if you have never been there before, don't see any No Parking signs, someone else did it near the entrance without issue and it's plenty wide for trucks to pass both ways...is it really necessary to speak in that tone, manner, and with nasty long paused looks to boot...? Or could you just speak firmly and respectfully? (We're not kids- We are all adults here). Funny -she did try to give our dog a small milk bone after she "got it all out", but he refused (and he's food motivated); I wasn't at all shocked, pretty sure she scared him- or he just wasn't impressed with her behavior.
(One of the photos shows the parked truck that had issues on the way in- and was there for a while- unbeknownest to me at the time this photo would come in handy👀... FYI: you're apparently not supposed to stop here AT ALL. EVER.↘️. 🫡Thank you nice lady, for the information.)"

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Freeman Park is a fantastic choice for families looking for a fun and accessible beach day. The ability to drive directly onto the beach means less lugging of gear, and kids often love the novelty of being so close to the water in the car. The open space allows children to run and play freely, and the off-leash dog policy (in season) can be a hit with families who bring their pets. Reddit

Tips for Families: Pack plenty of snacks and drinks, as amenities are limited. Consider bringing beach toys and games for the kids. While there are no showers, bringing a small portable shower or a large jug of water can help rinse off sandy feet before heading home. The pier restaurant offers a convenient option for a meal. TikTokReddit

🐶 Dog Owners

If you're traveling with your furry best friend, Freeman Park is a must-visit. It's one of the most accommodating beaches for dogs in the area, especially during the off-season when they can often roam freely. This allows your dog to experience the joy of the beach without constant leash restrictions. InstagramReddit

Responsible Pet Ownership: Remember to always be prepared to clean up after your pet and ensure they are under control, even when off-leash. Bringing plenty of water for your dog is essential, especially on warm days. The drive-on access also makes it easier to manage your dog's comfort and safety. Reddit

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Driving on the Sand: A Unique Experience

Freeman Park stands out as one of the few beaches on the East Coast where you can legally drive your vehicle directly onto the sand. This offers unparalleled convenience for beachgoers, allowing you to park your car steps from your chosen spot, unload gear with ease, and enjoy a more secluded beach experience. It's particularly appealing for families with lots of equipment or those who simply want to avoid the trek from a parking lot. The permit system ensures that the beach doesn't become overly congested, and the drive itself, while potentially bumpy, is part of the adventure. Instagram+1

Essential for 4x4 Owners: While some visitors have reported seeing non-4x4 vehicles, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is highly recommended for navigating the sand safely and effectively. The sand can be soft and deep, and getting stuck is a real possibility for under-equipped vehicles. Before heading out, it's wise to check recent conditions and ensure your vehicle is properly aired down if necessary. The permit fee is a small price to pay for the convenience and unique access it provides. Reddit

Tips for a Smooth Drive: Lowering tire pressure can significantly improve traction on sand. Drive slowly and steadily, avoiding sudden stops or turns. If you encounter soft sand, try to maintain momentum. Always be aware of the tide and avoid driving too close to the water's edge, especially during high tide. TikTokReddit

A Haven for Dog Lovers

For pet owners, Freeman Park is a true gem. Unlike many other beaches that impose strict leash laws or time restrictions for dogs, Freeman Park offers a more relaxed environment. During the off-season (typically October 1st to March 31st), dogs are often allowed off-leash, provided they remain under voice control. This freedom allows your canine companions to truly enjoy the beach, run, and play without constant restraint. InstagramReddit

Planning Your Dog's Visit: Even when off-leash is permitted, it's crucial to be a responsible pet owner. Always carry poop bags and clean up after your dog. Ensure your dog is well-behaved and doesn't disturb other beachgoers. If your dog is reactive or prone to chasing, keeping them on a leash, even when off-leash is allowed, might be the best option for everyone's enjoyment. Reddit

Seasonal Considerations: During the peak summer months, leash rules may be more strictly enforced to accommodate all beach visitors. Always check the latest regulations before your visit to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for both you and your pet. Instagram

Seasonal Delights: Fall Fun

While Freeman Park is a beloved summer destination, it also offers unique seasonal attractions. During the fall, the area around the Carolina Beach Pier transforms into a charming pumpkin patch. This festive setup provides a delightful contrast to the usual beach scene, offering a chance for visitors to enjoy autumn activities with an ocean backdrop. TikTok+1

A Festive Atmosphere: The pumpkin patch often includes a bar and ice cream stand, making it a perfect spot for families and friends to gather. It's a popular event, drawing locals and tourists alike who want to experience a bit of fall spirit by the sea. The combination of beach vibes and seasonal decorations creates a memorable experience. TikTok+1

Beyond the Patch: Even outside of the pumpkin patch season, Freeman Park's appeal extends year-round. The cooler months offer a more serene beach experience, ideal for long walks, fishing, or simply enjoying the coastal scenery without the summer crowds. Instagram
