Visitors consistently praise the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge for its beautiful, modern cable-stayed design and its vital role in connecting Illinois and Missouri. Many appreciate the smooth, wide lanes and the lack of tolls. While primarily a functional crossing, its scenic views of the Mississippi River and surrounding landscape are often highlighted as a pleasant bonus.
"I love love love cable-stayed bridges and the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge is an example of why. It's just beautiful. With two tall H-shaped piers similar to the Quincy Bayview Bridge (Illinois), the Great River Bridge (Iowa) and the Cochrane USA Bridge (Alabama).
This one is named for a Missouri politician who served as a US Representative from 1981 to 1996, it was completed in 2003 and has 60 feet of clearance below to the Mississippi River. It carries four lanes of Route 34 and Route 74 and IL 146 between East Cape Girardeau Illinois and Cape Girardeau Missouri.
The bridge replaced the old Cape Girardeau Bridge which was adjacent until it was demolished in 2004. There is no toll to cross the bridge."

"Beautiful bridge connected the East and the West. Unless you are an excellent swimmer, I strongly recommend it. The Illinois farmland there is special to me. A beautiful mature bald eagle flew along side my vehicle for a piece immediately after I crossed. 💜🇺🇸"

"I rode across what must have been the previous bridge in 1982 on my bicycle. As I remember, it was a metal lattice & I could look down at the mighty Mississippi as I rode.
This bridge looks much more sturdy."
