Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Mansard Petroglyphs for their unique ancient rock art and breathtaking canyon views. The hike is generally considered moderate, with a manageable rock scramble being the main challenge. Some advise caution regarding road conditions to the trailhead and recommend bringing headlamps for sunset hikes.

"I'm so glad I read the reviews here before doing this hike. As others have said, it is not difficult if you don't have mobility issues. Contrary to the map you get at the visitor center, which says it's strenuous. It will get your heart pumping, but that's part of the idea oh a hike, no? :)

Yes, there's a "wall" that you have to climb, but it is completely doable for almost anyone. The views from above are SO worth it. And the petroglyphs are a super bonus.

It took us around 2.5 hours out and back."

Erika Lehmann

"We decided to stop here on our way back from Kanab to Laverkin. So glad we did. Four cars in lot when we parked. About an hour each way up and down. Just two spots where you have to climb a couple rocks otherwise it is all switch backs so you really don’t notice the almost 1000ft ascent. Great views and so worth while."

Troy

"Totally worth the 4.6 mile trek. It’s moderate with minor inclines and switch backs. We hiked this pretty quickly in under 2 hours due to going later in the day close to sunset. We had to use head lamps and flashlights for the last mile. This trail is very well marked. There is a small rock scramble up a short wall. Don’t feel discouraged about that! Once you’re up the wall turn immediately to the right the trail begins again. You do not have to climb up the entire wall. The views and the petroglyphs are worth it! It’s a beautiful hike. We could have used micro spikes on this trail since it had snowed 4-5 inches the day before. We managed fine without them but definitely recommend any time of the year."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Mansard Petroglyphs

The Mansard Petroglyphs are a significant archaeological site featuring ancient rock art. These petroglyphs are unique due to their distinctive grid-like patterns, a feature not commonly found in other regional rock art. Created likely by the Ancestral Puebloans between AD 950 and 1150, their exact meaning remains a subject of speculation among archaeologists and enthusiasts. Some theories suggest they could represent ancient maps, astronomical observations, or symbolic representations of their culture. The name 'Mansard' itself is a bit of a misnomer in this context, as it typically refers to a type of roofline in architecture, not a geological formation or cultural group. Instagram

Visiting the site offers a tangible connection to the past. The hike to reach the petroglyphs is part of the experience, winding through the striking red rock landscape. The effort involved in reaching them adds to their mystique and the sense of discovery. It's crucial for visitors to remember that these are ancient artifacts and should be treated with the utmost respect, meaning no touching or defacing the art. Instagram+1

While the exact purpose of the grid patterns is unknown, their presence invites contemplation and wonder. They serve as a silent testament to the ingenuity and worldview of the people who created them. The Mansard Petroglyph Panel is a reminder of the rich history embedded within the natural beauty of Utah, offering a unique glimpse into a bygone era. Instagram

The Hike to the Petroglyphs

The trail to the Mansard Petroglyphs is a rewarding, albeit sometimes challenging, hike. It's characterized by switchbacks that gradually ascend the terrain, making the climb more manageable than a direct ascent. Many hikers find the trail to be well-maintained and clearly marked, which is a significant plus, especially for those hiking later in the day. Reddit

A notable feature of the hike is a short rock scramble, often described as a 'wall' that requires using both hands and legs to navigate. While this might deter some, reviews consistently state it's a doable obstacle for most individuals with reasonable mobility. Once over this scramble, the trail continues, sometimes with sandy sections, before reaching the petroglyph sites. The effort is widely considered to be worth it for the stunning views and the historical significance of the rock art. Reddit

Hikers should be prepared for varying conditions. Depending on the season, the trail might be dusty, snowy, or muddy. Wearing appropriate footwear is essential, and in winter conditions, microspikes can be beneficial. Bringing plenty of water is also a must, given the desert environment. For those who enjoy hiking near sunset, carrying a headlamp is highly recommended for the return journey. InstagramReddit
