Asheville’s Best Hikes this fall. 🍁🥾 ⬇️ Number one — Craggy Gardens. Quick, easy, and the views will knock you out. 🌄 ⬇️ Number two — Graveyard Fields. Cooler temps, waterfalls, and peak fall colors all in one loop. 💦🍂 ⬇️ Number three — Looking Glass Rock. It’s a climb, but the payoff is one of the best overlooks in the mountains. 🏔️ Cool air, fall leaves, and killer views — it doesn’t get better...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Graveyard Fields for its beautiful waterfalls and stunning fall foliage, with the lower falls being easily accessible and the upper falls offering a more challenging hike. Some find the trails strenuous and parking very limited, especially during peak times.

"The upper falls is a bit rough trekking. Not suitable for kids. The lower fall is part of a look that ends with a big stair and big rocks over lower falls. And the board walk is close to the lower falls. If anyone goes down the stairs closer to the restroom, they can quickly see the lowers falls and see the boardwalk without having to do the entire loop. Though the trail is really nice."

RRS

"This is an easy and fun area to hike. If you want a more challenging hike, there are connector trails that lead up to the knobs. I highly recommend jumping into the pristine water of the lower falls."

Nathan Lambertson

"We only did the shorter hike to the lower falls & towards the Mountain to Sea trail. Beautiful! Very tranquil place to rest, have a picnic lunch. It's off the Blue Ridge Parkway around Milepost 418. From the parking lot area you descend down stairs to the few trails. Fairly easy to moderate hike. Hiking shoes definitely recommended. Areas you can swim in but be careful for slippery rocks. Can't wait to go back and hike to the upper falls (about 3 miles round trip)"

Navigating the Trails at Graveyard Fields

Graveyard Fields offers a tale of two trails. The path to the lower falls is relatively accessible, featuring stairs and a boardwalk that makes it manageable for many visitors. This section is ideal for those seeking a quick scenic reward without a strenuous effort. You can easily reach the lower falls and even enjoy a refreshing dip in the designated swimming area. Reddit+1

The loop trail to the upper falls, however, presents a different challenge. This route is considerably more demanding, involving an incline, rough terrain, large rocks, roots, and occasional muddy patches. It's a journey for those who appreciate the adventure and the experience of traversing a more rugged natural environment, with the upper falls serving as a rewarding, though perhaps less visually dramatic, destination compared to the lower falls. Reddit

Sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended for both trails, but absolutely essential if you plan to tackle the upper falls. Be prepared for varying conditions, and always check weather forecasts before heading out. Reddit

The Allure of Fall Foliage

Graveyard Fields is renowned for its spectacular fall foliage, making it a prime destination for leaf-peepers. During autumn, the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows, drawing significant crowds to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Instagram+2

To truly appreciate the fall colors without the overwhelming crowds, visiting on a weekday morning is your best bet. Early risers can often find a more peaceful experience, allowing for better photo opportunities and a more serene connection with nature. InstagramReddit

While the fall colors are a major draw, remember that this also means parking will be extremely limited. Be patient, consider carpooling if possible, and be prepared for roadside parking and a short walk to the trailhead. Reddit

Seasonal Delights: Berries and Swimming

Beyond its waterfalls and fall colors, Graveyard Fields offers seasonal treats. In August, the trails are dotted with wild blueberries and blackberries, providing a delightful foraging opportunity for visitors. Arriving early in the morning during this time can lead to a more solitary and fruitful berry-picking experience. Reddit

For those seeking to cool off, the lower falls area features a popular swimming hole. While inviting, visitors are cautioned to be mindful of slippery rocks around the water's edge. It's a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the natural beauty on a warmer day. Reddit

Remember to practice Leave No Trace principles when enjoying these natural amenities. Pack out everything you pack in, and be respectful of the environment and other visitors. Reddit
