Reviews Summary

California State University Channel Islands is praised for its beautiful, serene campus with striking mission-style architecture and stunning mountain views. Students benefit from personalized attention due to small class sizes and accessible professors, leading to strong academic outcomes and graduate school placements. However, some visitors and students note the rural location's limited social life and amenities, and there are mixed reviews regarding dining and housing costs. Reddit

"This review is long overdue. My daughter transferred here for Psychology as CSUCI has a specialized psychology program that is much more comprehensive than other universities. She got an amazing education, built lasting relationships with her professors here, got research opportunities, and bc of all this, was able to go to grad school, mentored by a world class neuroscientist.

Obviously you will get out of school what you put into it, but I feel that the opportunities being here afforded her were greater bc this is a small school and one of the newest CSU campuses - and as such there also were no issues with impacted majors, overcrowded classes, not getting into classes etc - that are so prevalent in other CSU campuses.

I would say this is more of a liberal arts school - their STEM departments still need to be built out a bit more. But for my daughter, it worked perfectly for her!"

"Recently attended an orientation tour of this beautiful campus situated at the base of the Santa Monica Mountain Range.
While the campus is in a remote location, the combination of large open walkways and greenery around the majestic historical Mission Style buildings. Very peaceful and serene which I think would be a wonderful environment that supports learning. Campus is very well maintained."

"I give it two stars cause of the nature surrounding campus. If you can afford it though, go to a different school. Cafeteria sucks, they secretly raised tuition for me by $3,000…housing doesn’t care for you, police just care about tickets, no social life at all. My community college had more programs and money….they lost government funding in stem…..so yeah. They only hire campus jobs at beginning of semester. The food panty last 30k and doesn’t have anything now."

The Unique History of CSUCI

California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) occupies a unique place in California's educational landscape, not just for its mission-style architecture but also for its origins. The campus is situated on land that was formerly the Camarillo State Hospital, a large psychiatric institution that operated for decades. This history lends a distinct character to the university, with remnants of the past integrated into its present. Visitors often note the blend of historical structures with modern academic facilities, creating a visually compelling environment. Reddit

The transition from a state hospital to a university campus involved significant redevelopment, preserving some of the original buildings while constructing new ones. This has resulted in a campus that feels both historic and forward-looking. The mission-style architecture is a prominent feature, contributing to the serene and picturesque atmosphere that many visitors praise. This unique historical context adds a layer of intrigue for those interested in the site's past and its transformation into a center for higher learning. Reddit

Academic Opportunities and Student Life

CSUCI is recognized for its commitment to providing a personalized educational experience, largely due to its status as one of the newer CSU campuses. This often translates to smaller class sizes and a more intimate learning environment compared to larger, more established universities. Students frequently highlight the accessibility of professors, who are often willing to mentor and provide research opportunities. This has been instrumental for graduates pursuing further education, with many successfully gaining admission to graduate programs. Reddit

However, the rural location means that social life and access to external amenities require planning. Students looking for a bustling city experience might find it different from expectations. Nevertheless, for those who value a close-knit academic community and direct engagement with faculty, CSUCI offers significant advantages. Reddit
