"Absolutely Gorgeous! We visited in late april and arrived about 3:00pm. You park in the gravel dusty parking area and walk through the gate to an open field covered in wildflowers! The has several choices for directions to head. It doesn’t matter which way you go, you will not be disappointed! The hike was fairly easy and breathtaking at every turn! When we arrived at the falls a short time later it was truly amazing! We spend the last hour and a half there just listening to the sound of the waterfall and soaking up the sun! What a great day trip!"

"Good parking, plenty of Porta potties, and that's it IMO. Water falls are dry... Trails aren't marked so be careful and use some kind of GPS guided trail map."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider bringing snacks and water, and ensure children stay on the marked paths. While the main falls are accessible, the trail to the base can be tricky, so assess your children's abilities before attempting that section. The dog-friendly nature of the trail also means you can bring your furry family members along for the adventure.

The Dark Hollow Falls Trail Experience
It's important to note that trail conditions can vary significantly. During the rainy season or after heavy rainfall, the ground can be very wet and boggy, and numerous creeks may need to be crossed. Waterproof footwear is highly recommended during these times. Conversely, during summer and fall, the falls may be significantly less impressive or even dry. For the best experience regarding both water flow and the surrounding natural beauty, visiting in late winter or spring is ideal.
While the main attraction is Hollow Falls, the trail system in the area offers opportunities to explore further. Some hikers recommend continuing to Beatson Falls, which is described as very impressive, though the trail to it can be tricky. Always be mindful of your surroundings and consider using a GPS-guided map, as trails may not always be clearly marked.
Timing Your Visit for Optimal Scenery
This spring window also generally coincides with higher water levels for the falls. After a significant rainfall, the cascade is at its most powerful and impressive. While the summer and fall months offer pleasant hiking weather, the lack of precipitation can lead to the falls being dry or having very minimal flow, which can be disappointing for those expecting a dramatic waterfall. Early winter can bring waterlogged conditions, which might make hiking more challenging.
Beyond the seasonal considerations, the day of the week also plays a role. Weekends tend to be significantly more crowded than weekdays, with more visitors vying for parking and trail space. If you prefer a more serene experience and fewer people, planning your visit for a weekday is highly advisable.
