"First time visiting this park. The small lakes were nice on the Wetland Trail. Also hiked the Switchback Trail which was awesome and then took the Gelding Trail which wasn't marked very well or used frequently. Would definitely go back again. Don't miss the remote controlled airplanes and the covered bridge. Definitely a highlight!"

"I'm not a fan of hiking but Hillman has a Wetland Trail which is easy to walk and passes several nice ponds (see one pond in attached picture).
If hiking's your thing, there's 18 other trails running a total of 34 miles.
The other feature of the park is for a specific hobby of radio-controlled aircraft flying. Participants must meet strict rules to fly.
Also check out the covered bridge at the park's Kramer Road end.

"Very minimalist park. It's essentially for hunting and trapping. Lots of hiking trails, and a private rc airport, members only.
Not the place if youre looking for a day trip with kiddos."

Navigating Hillman's Trails
When planning your exploration, consider the time of year. Late fall and winter hikes might not be advisable due to potential conditions. For those seeking a more accessible experience, the Wetland Trail is a popular choice, featuring easy walking paths that meander past several tranquil ponds. For a more adventurous outing, combining loops like 'Short N Sweet' and 'Colt' can create a roughly 3-mile excursion. Always carry a map or use a GPS device to ensure you stay on track, especially when venturing onto less-traveled paths.
The Unique Appeal of State Gamelands
For visitors who are not hunters, it's advisable to check the hunting calendar and consider visiting during non-hunting periods to ensure a more relaxed experience. Wearing bright colors, especially during hunting seasons, is a recommended safety precaution. This gameland designation also means that the park's landscape has been shaped by its history, including past use as a strip mine, which has contributed to its varied terrain with open areas, woods, and dense underbrush.
Beyond the Trails: Unique Park Features
Another charming feature is the historic covered bridge located at the Kramer Road end of the park. This picturesque structure offers a lovely photo opportunity and adds a touch of rustic appeal to the landscape. For those interested in a more tranquil experience, the Wetland Trail provides easy access to several ponds, offering a peaceful setting for a leisurely walk and a chance to observe local nature.
