What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Haw Creek Preserve Russell Landing for its excellent fishing and calm waters suitable for kayaking. However, the unpredictable road flooding and the hazardous submerged debris in the blackwater creek are significant drawbacks. The boardwalk's condition also raises safety concerns.
"Easily accessible dock and calm water for an easy paddle with kayaks, paddleboards, or small crafts. Wouldn't recommend anything that is on the softer side of inflatable because there are a lot of underwater trees and other debris that are not visible.
This location is not swimmable and could be dangerous because of underwater snagging if you were to fall off a paddleboard or flip a kayak. There are also very few easy/safe areas to get off along the banks. You have to be skilled at docking and lifting out and in without touching the creek floor and docking around cypress nubs. Just some things to keep in mind."

"The boards could stand to be replaced. There is lots of nails sticking up out of the boards all along the walkway and they are very damp/slippery/mold covered in some spots. We saw water moccasins, alligators, and turtles down below. The field that this and at used to be fully mowed but now a small section of it is mowed. It’s well shaded and there is a boat launch for kayaks or canoes. The water here is quite black, you cannot see into it at all even when the sun is high in the sky. Long dirt road to get here is smooth not a lot of huge pot holes. Not a super long hike but wheelchair accessible."

"Fishing is awesome large crappie. Bigger catfish gramps and I fished there alot come across cresent lake and troll spin beetle black yellow with live minnow can't go wrong. Enjoy"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Navigating the Blackwater Creek
Real travelers advise caution, noting that even seemingly calm waters can hide treacherous underwater snags. The banks themselves can be challenging to dock around, often featuring cypress nubs that require careful navigation. For those new to paddling or less experienced, it's wise to stick to the main channels and be extra attentive. The dark water, while visually striking, demands respect and a heightened sense of awareness for a safe and enjoyable trip.
Best Practices for Paddling
* Know your limits: Only paddle if you are comfortable with the conditions.
* Stay aware: Constantly scan the water for submerged hazards.
* Dock with care: Practice your docking and launching techniques to avoid the creek floor.
* Avoid inflatables: Softer inflatables are more susceptible to damage from debris.
Fishing Opportunities
Experienced fishermen recommend trolling with spinners in various colors like black, yellow, and beetle, often combined with live minnows for irresistible bait. This approach has proven effective for catching larger catfish and crappie. The availability of a boat launch further enhances the fishing experience, allowing for easier access to different parts of the creek and nearby lake.
Tips for Anglers
* Target Species: Focus on crappie and catfish.
* Effective Lures: Try black, yellow, or beetle spinners.
* Bait: Live minnows are highly recommended.
* Technique: Trolling along the creek and towards Crescent Lake can be fruitful.
Road Access and Conditions
When the road is dry, it's a straightforward drive, and the preserve itself is well-shaded, offering a pleasant environment. However, the risk of encountering a flooded road means that a visit might need to be postponed or rerouted. It's advisable to check recent local conditions or inquire with locals if possible before making the journey, especially if you are traveling from a distance.
Preparing for the Drive
* Check the weather: Avoid visiting immediately after heavy rainfall.
* Monitor conditions: Look for recent reports on road status if available.
* Consider your vehicle: While the road is smooth, high water can be an issue for any vehicle.
