What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the pretty woodland trails and scenic marsh views at Kate Furbish Preserve. However, the experience is significantly marred by an overwhelming number of ticks, even on maintained paths, leading to extensive post-visit checks and concerns about safety. Trail marking can also be an issue for some.
"Went here with the dogs (east side), having a nice but buggy walk, realized halfway through that we were covered in ticks. Went back to the car, and picked ticks off of ourselves (2 adults and 2 dogs) for 6 hours and counting. On the order of 500-600, although lost count after 50. We stayed on trails the whole time, not bushwhacking. Not a lot of overgrowth. Wearing long pants and sleeves. We do a lot of woods walks/hikes across the northeast, and have never experienced anything like this. There were many ticks crawling on the pavement at the parking area! We might try again if there’s snow on the ground. It’s too bad. Pretty spot."

"Most of the trails didn't seem to be marked and there was no trail map either. Nice nature area though."

Navigating the Trails and Tick Concerns
A major concern raised by visitors is the exceptionally high tick population, particularly during warmer months. Multiple accounts detail finding hundreds of ticks on themselves and their pets, even when staying on marked trails. This has led to strong advice to take extreme precautions, including wearing long sleeves and pants, using effective tick repellent, and conducting thorough tick checks immediately after visiting. Some suggest visiting during winter months to avoid this issue entirely.
Access and Amenities
While the preserve itself is a natural area, information regarding specific amenities like restrooms is scarce. Visitors should plan accordingly and come prepared for a natural experience without facilities. The proximity to the golf club might offer some conveniences, but direct amenities within the preserve are not widely advertised.
