Flash back to Crisp Lighthouse trip. I wish it was easier to reach this amazing Lighthouse located along Lake Superior. I did it in a mini van but the suspension sure whined. It is a 18 mile two track basically that is anything but smooth. It is considered Newberry and was built around 1903. It is worth the drive. #lighthouses #lakesuperior #travel #followme #upperpeninsulamichigan

What’s in a name? That’s the question I always ask whenever I visit a place. The Ojibwa called Point Iroquois (pronounced ˈir-ə-ˌkwȯi) “Place of Iroquois Bones”. The name references a battle that took place between the invading Iroquois war party and local Ojibwa. The Iroquois were attempting to dominate the fur trade and gain influence but the Ojibwa won the battle and put a stop to the attempted...

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Rough Road to the Lighthouse

The journey to Point Iroquois Lighthouse is part of the adventure. The final 18 miles consist of an unpaved two-track road. While some visitors have successfully navigated this in minivans, it's important to be aware that the road can be quite rough and bumpy. TikTok It's advisable to drive slowly and cautiously, and if you have a vehicle with higher clearance, it will undoubtedly make for a more comfortable and less stressful drive. This unpaved section adds to the remote and rugged charm of the location, ensuring that reaching the lighthouse feels like a genuine discovery. TikTok

This less-than-perfect road is a key factor for visitors to consider when planning their trip. It means that spontaneous visits might require a bit more preparation, and those with delicate vehicles might want to reconsider or proceed with extreme caution. The effort to reach the lighthouse, however, is often rewarded by the stunning views and the sense of accomplishment upon arrival. TikTok

A Beacon of History on Lake Superior

Point Iroquois Lighthouse, officially known as the Point Iroquois Light Station, stands as a significant historical landmark on the shores of Lake Superior. Constructed in 1855, its primary purpose was to guide vessels navigating the often treacherous waters into the St. Mary's River, a vital shipping channel. Instagram The lighthouse's strategic location made it crucial for maritime traffic, especially as the region's resources and waterborne trade grew. The original structure included a wood tower and living quarters, with the light itself added shortly after. Instagram

The name 'Point Iroquois' itself carries historical weight, referencing a significant battle between the Ojibwa and an invading Iroquois war party vying for control of the fur trade. Instagram This historical context adds another layer of depth to the site, connecting visitors to the rich and sometimes turbulent past of the Upper Peninsula. Today, the lighthouse serves not only as a navigational aid but also as a museum, preserving and sharing its maritime heritage with visitors. InstagramReddit

The Allure of the Rocky Beach

The beach at Point Iroquois Lighthouse is a unique and inviting natural feature. Unlike sandy shores, this beach is characterized by its abundance of smooth, round rocks, perfect for beachcombing and searching for interesting geological finds. Reddit Visitors often enjoy the tactile experience of sifting through the stones and listening to the gentle lapping of Lake Superior's waves against them. It's a picturesque spot for photography, offering a different kind of coastal beauty. Instagram

Adding to its appeal, the walk to the beach is made exceptionally accessible. A continuous ramp/boardwalk loop provides a handicapped-accessible route, ensuring that individuals using wheelchairs or walkers can easily enjoy the natural beauty of the shoreline. Reddit This thoughtful design allows everyone to experience the serene environment, search for unique rocks, and even watch the impressive freighters that pass by on the vast expanse of Lake Superior.
