What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Tongue Point Light visually striking with its unique blue color, offering peaceful coastal views from the road. However, significant disappointment arises from the inability to access the lighthouse up close due to private property and security fencing, leading many to suggest boat tours as the only viable option for a closer look.
"Can't get within 100 feet of the light house. It's behind fences. It's big enough to see from the road, but if you're looking to get up close, this may not be the light house for you."
Christina Barrett
"Extremely disappointing. You can not access this lighthouse by land. It is set behind a power plant and they not only gate and fence up any area but we figured we can walk rocks to get to but again trying they fence up and gate up and put blocking around that so you can not access at all. We have visited almost all lighthouses on land from NYC to Canada and this one little one is unique because it is blue but the fact you can not get to it is very upsetting."

"They wouldn't let me in. The guy says there's no lighthouse here. Google says there is. Guess you can only get there by boat."

Frequently Asked Questions
🚇 🗺️ Getting There
Tongue Point Light is located on private property, primarily within a power plant's security zone. Direct land access is heavily restricted and fenced off. Many visitors report being unable to get close by car or on foot. Boat tours are often recommended for the best viewing experience.
While you can drive on the roads near Tongue Point, you cannot access the lighthouse itself by car due to security and private property restrictions. Fences and gates prevent entry.
There may be roadside parking available for viewing from a distance, but there is no dedicated parking for direct access to the lighthouse grounds.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
No tickets are required for land-based viewing from the road, as access is limited. If you opt for a boat tour, you will need to purchase tickets for that specific excursion.
Unfortunately, tours of the lighthouse interior are not available to the public due to its location on private property and security concerns.
As the lighthouse is not publicly accessible by land, there are no official opening hours. Viewing from the road is possible during daylight hours.
📸 📸 Photography
Since you can't get close by land, use a zoom lens from the road for a decent shot. Boat tours offer more dynamic angles, but be mindful of the boat's movement.
Safe roadside pull-offs offer views of the blue tower. For a more complete perspective, consider booking a boat tour that passes by the lighthouse.
For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
Day-Trippers
Focus on the scenic drive and roadside views rather than expecting an in-depth visit. If getting close is a priority, research boat tours that might pass by the lighthouse as part of a larger itinerary.
Photography Enthusiasts
Consider the time of day for optimal lighting. Boat tours can provide more dynamic angles, but ensure you have a stable camera setup if shooting from a moving vessel. The surrounding coastal scenery also offers opportunities for landscape photography.

Understanding Access Restrictions
This situation makes it difficult for those hoping for a traditional lighthouse visit where you can explore the grounds or climb the tower. The primary reason for these restrictions is the operational nature of the power plant. Therefore, if you are planning a trip specifically to see Tongue Point Light up close, it's crucial to adjust your expectations for land-based visits.
For those determined to get a better view, boat tours are frequently mentioned as the most viable option. These tours can navigate closer to the coastline, offering a perspective that is otherwise unattainable from the shore. It's advisable to research and book these tours in advance if this is your primary goal.
Viewing from the Road
It's important to note that the 'view' from the road is exactly that – a view from a distance. You won't be able to explore the lighthouse's immediate surroundings or get a sense of its scale up close. However, for many, the visual of the unique blue tower against the backdrop of the sea is still a worthwhile sight.
When stopping by the roadside, prioritize safety. Ensure you are pulling over in designated areas and are aware of any traffic. The peaceful atmosphere of the coastline can be a pleasant part of the experience, even with the access limitations.
