📍 John Rock Trail Loop Located in Pisgah National Forest this North Carolina hike is on the harder side of moderate. With lots of rocks and roots the 1,100ft climb is worth it for stunning views of the nearby Looking Glass Rock (you can also hike to the top of that mountain). 🥾John Rock Loop Trail🥾 📍Pisgah National Forest, NC 🚶🏽‍♀️5 miles total Beautiful trail & overlook! A lot of the trail is along the river. I took the loop clockwise & the incline is INSANE lol, so maybe go counterclockwise if you don’t want such a steep hike... but I still preferred it because you get most of the elevation done in one shot & get most of the hike done before the overlook. Lots of mud...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking panoramic views from John Rock, calling them glorious and fantastic, especially during fall foliage. The hike itself is described as enjoyable with beautiful forest scenery and river walks. However, the trail's popularity means parking can be a significant challenge, and caution is advised on the steep, wet rock at the overlook.

"Nice 4 mile hike. Starts out pretty flat and while it does get a little steep, it's not too terrible in that capacity. John Rock itself is a little smaller than I thought it would be and there's a noticeable downward slope that leads off of the edge of the cliff. It is pretty wide though. It was a little wet out on the ledge itself so do be careful. There's about 12-15 feet of ledge and then nothing so if you do slip you could potentially keep going. Beautiful view though!"

Sarah Grimes

"The hike to John Rock via Cat Cow Track was really enjoyable. The travel was really well marked, with support of a little map from the Parks office. The view at the top was fantastic, with a 180 degree panorama. It provided a fantastic view of the Looking Glass rock and parts of the parkway looping in the distant trees.
The path featured a few creek crossings and a few log bridge crossings. The forest featured rhododendrons, lavish wildflowers, and other deciduous trees.
Wear grippy shoes as the rock was steep."

Rachael Holt

"Great hike with views, did Cat Gap loop with the John’s Rock overlook. You get a great view of looking glass and a waterfall on the hike too. Around 5 or so miles for this route."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the John Rock Loop

The John Rock Loop is a popular route, often combined with the Cat Gap Trail, making for a roughly 5-6 mile hike with about 1,100 feet of elevation gain. Many hikers prefer to take the loop clockwise, tackling the steepest incline early on, which means the descent is more gradual. However, going counter-clockwise allows for a more sustained, less intense climb. Instagram The trail is well-marked, but having a map can be beneficial, especially if you're exploring less-traveled sections. Reddit

Expect a varied terrain underfoot. The path begins relatively flat, meandering alongside the Davidson River, offering a peaceful start.
