📍 Spruce Creek Trail to Mohawk Lakes Trail AllTrails said 8.4 mi but our gps said closer to 10 mi ~2200 ft elevation gain. A challenging hike but easier than many other “hard” trails. 10/10 recommend #explorecolorado #hikingadventures #alpinelake #fallleaves #bluewater

Reviews Summary

Hikers rave about the stunning alpine scenery and the rewarding beauty of Mohawk Lakes, calling it an awesome and worthwhile hike. However, many note the challenging rocky terrain, steep final ascent, and the disheartening amount of trash left on the trail. Altitude sickness is also a common concern for those not acclimatized.

"Beautiful views, awesome hike, easy inclines. There are a lot of loose rocks and roots throughout the trails so definitely have to be mindful of your footing but not difficult. It was very disheartening to see how many people left their trash and poop bags throughout the trail, but the trail itself was great."

Daniel Paasche

"Don't make the same mistake we did. You do not need to walk up the rocky 4x4 road, there is an actual trail. When standing at the big map board, turn around and cross the parking lot. The trailhead is right there. We walked up the 4x4 road which was hard and not very interesting. Saw the trail after coming down. Will try that next time. The lakes are amazing! Very hard to get up there but it's worth it!"

"Started on Spruce Creek Trail and hiked to upper Mohawk Lake. Absolutely worth the hike. Can get steep at parts and the altitude can make you quickly winded if you're not used to high altitudes- but coming from living at "

Navigating the Trail: Beyond the 4x4 Road

Many visitors mistakenly hike up the rocky, unmaintained 4x4 road that parallels the Spruce Creek Trail. As noted by Reddit users, this path is arduous and less scenic. The actual trailhead is located across the parking lot from the main map board. Look for the well-defined footpath that winds through the trees. Reddit This trail offers a much more enjoyable and visually rewarding experience, leading you through forests and alongside streams before the more challenging ascent begins. Instagram

As you ascend, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged. The final push to the upper Mohawk Lakes involves a significant rock scramble, requiring careful footing and a good sense of balance. While challenging, this section is what makes reaching the lakes so rewarding. Reddit Downloading an offline map from services like AllTrails is highly recommended to ensure you stay on the correct path, especially as trail markers can become less frequent in the higher alpine sections. Instagram

Remember that this trail starts at over 10,000 feet. The altitude can significantly impact your energy levels and pace. Take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, and be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness. TikTokInstagram The effort, however, is undeniably worth it for the stunning alpine scenery and the pristine beauty of the Mohawk Lakes. Instagram

The Majesty of Mohawk Lakes

The reward for your efforts on the Spruce Creek Trail is the breathtaking series of Mohawk Lakes. These alpine gems are nestled high in the Tenmile Range, offering a dramatic contrast to the forests below. Each lake has its own unique charm, with crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding rugged peaks. Instagram+1

Reaching the upper lakes often involves navigating a challenging rock scramble, a true test of your hiking prowess. But once you arrive, the panoramic views are simply spectacular. The tranquility of these high-altitude lakes, often accompanied by the sight of mountain goats grazing nearby, makes the strenuous climb entirely worthwhile. InstagramReddit

Photographers will find endless opportunities here. The reflections in the lakes, especially during the calm morning hours, are iconic. The dramatic mountain backdrop provides a stunning canvas for capturing the raw beauty of the Colorado Rockies. Instagram+1

Respecting the Environment: Leave No Trace

Unfortunately, a recurring theme in reviews and discussions is the issue of trash and waste left behind on the trail. This means packing out everything you pack in, including all trash, food scraps, and especially dog waste. Reddit

Proper disposal of waste helps protect the delicate alpine ecosystem and ensures that future visitors can enjoy the trail's pristine beauty. Be mindful of where you step, stay on marked trails to prevent erosion, and avoid disturbing wildlife. TikTok
