The Boy in the boat, Louis Mieusset, of Forest Hills. I've been visiting him for nearly 20 years and the local legend repeated to me was always that he drowned (because hes depicted in his little boat, im sure) but in fact he died of nephritis and Scarlett fever. For anyone interested who hasnt read the story a hundred times already, Find a Grave has a newspaper clipping featuring his mother, Lo...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Forest Hills Cemetery's beauty, describing it as a vast, well-maintained outdoor museum with stunning sculptures and a peaceful atmosphere. Many appreciate its unique garden cemetery design and the opportunity for quiet reflection. Some wish for more organized tours and events similar to other famous cemeteries.

"On a sunny winter day, when I seek solitude and deep reflection, I venture to the Forest Hills Cemetery. The snow-covered grounds, illuminated by the bright winter sun, sparkle with an ethereal light, giving the cemetery an almost serene, otherworldly beauty. The headstones, wrapped in a blanket of pristine white, cast long shadows that dance gently in the sunlight. Nearby, the ice-covered pond glistens like a jewel, its surface reflecting the clear blue sky and the stark silhouettes of leafless trees. Despite the chill in the air, the sun provides a comforting warmth, inviting contemplation amidst the delicate balance of life and stillness."

"One of the biggest and most beautiful cemeteries in New England. Unique, well maintained, and plenty to see. Peaceful. I had a long ride to get here, so I was so happy they had a bathroom and it was clean lol. Park outside or drive through. I, too, suggest driving through first to get a feel of the place. It's enormous. Bring your walking shoes and camera. No dogs or bikes, FYI. I will be back and definitely recommend, even just once. There's also an interesting cemetery across the street. So much to see! I was here for over 2 hours and I didn't see everything. For my video visit LUMLifeArt on YouTube or social media!"

"I went for the miniatures and got so much more. The place is a stunning outdoor museum. What a spectacular final resting place. Can’t wait to cover all 275 acres.

I wish they offered a full program of activities like Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn: bus tours of notable graves and important art, concerts, etc."

The Garden Cemetery Movement

Forest Hills Cemetery is a prime example of the garden cemetery movement that gained popularity in the mid-19th century. Unlike older, more crowded burial grounds, these cemeteries were designed as beautiful, park-like landscapes intended for public enjoyment and reflection, not just for burials. Reddit The goal was to create a serene and picturesque environment that offered a peaceful escape from urban life. Reddit

This design philosophy is evident in Forest Hills' winding paths, rolling hills, mature trees, and carefully curated landscaping. It encourages visitors to stroll, contemplate, and appreciate the natural beauty alongside the historical monuments. Reddit The cemetery's expansive 275 acres are a testament to this vision, offering a tranquil refuge that feels more like a botanical garden than a traditional graveyard. This approach has made it a popular spot for quiet walks and a unique destination for those seeking both history and natural beauty. Reddit

Navigating and Experiencing the Vast Grounds

Forest Hills Cemetery is immense, covering 275 acres, which means comfortable footwear is essential for exploration. Reddit Many visitors recommend driving through the cemetery first to get a general sense of its layout and the locations of key areas before parking and venturing out on foot. Reddit

The cemetery is designed to be a place for quiet contemplation and respectful exploration. While photography is encouraged due to its artistic and historical significance, visitors are reminded to be mindful of any ongoing services or private moments. Reddit The atmosphere is generally peaceful, making it an ideal spot for those seeking solitude or a reflective experience.
