What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Boone Greenway for its well-maintained paved paths, scenic wooded and creek-side views, and opportunities for wildlife spotting. The addition of new bridges and a covered bridge enhances its picturesque quality. However, some find the signage lacking for navigation and note unpleasant odors near the sewage processing area.
"The Boone Greenway trail is more geared toward walkers than bikers. Paved, plenty of parking with facilities, shelters and picnic tables.
Fairly flat, wooded and creek side. Lots of wildlife 🦌. New bridges with a scenic covered bridge. Picturesque and quiet. Unfortunately, runs along section of sewage processing area, so S T I N K Y!
For riders with fat tires head left onto Kennedy gravel trails after crossing bridge and enjoy the off road ride through the hills. Curves, switchbacks, some single track. Fun"

"My wife and I were looking for something to do outside that was close so we decided to drive to Boone, NC and walk the city's 4+ miles of Green Way. We had a picnic lunch before we started. There were ample picnic tables available. As nice as that was we were surprised to see there were no public bathrooms except for 2 port-a-johns.
Then we started our walk. For the most part very nice paved walking/jogging/bike riding trails. The problem is there are no good maps anywhere to show you where you are, very little signage along the trails and no color coding or anything really on the trails to help navigate through the 4+ miles of trails. Most of our walk was "walking blind" as to where we were and which way to go.
The scenery is ok but not that great. Large power lines run through some areas which would be rather scenic if they weren't there. Of course I realize this is a green way and not an actual hiking location but you'd think by now they'd at least have the trails marked.
Oh well, we did get some exercise."

"Great park, we’ll maintained with paved paths. There are some less traveled gravel paths to get out of the sun and under the shade of trees. Easily bike, run or walk over 5 miles almost without using the same paths. Plenty of flat areas, benches, picnic tables and trees to relax at. Plenty of good trout fishing spots on the New River that runs close to the trail most of the way."

Exploring the Trails: Paved vs. Gravel
For those seeking a bit more adventure, the Kennedy Gravel Trails and other offshoot paths provide a different kind of exploration. These unpaved routes offer curves, switchbacks, and some single-track sections, giving a more rugged, 'hiking-like' feel. These are great for fat-tire biking or for walkers who prefer a more natural surface away from the main crowds.
It's important to note that while the paved paths are generally well-maintained, signage can be inconsistent. Bringing a Boone Greenway map is highly recommended to ensure you can navigate the network effectively and discover all the different routes available.
Wildlife and Nature Encounters
Beyond birds, you might also spot other small local fauna that inhabit the area. The natural setting provides a habitat for creatures that are often unseen in more urban environments. The presence of the creek and river also supports aquatic life, and anglers often find good trout fishing spots along the Greenway.
While the natural beauty is a significant draw, be aware that a section of the Greenway runs alongside a sewage processing area. This can sometimes lead to unpleasant odors, which is a point of feedback from some visitors. Despite this, the overall natural setting and wildlife viewing opportunities remain a strong positive for many who visit the Boone Greenway.
Skatepark and Community Hub
Organized meetups and weekly sessions are often held at the skatepark, creating opportunities for skaters to connect, share tips, and improve their skills together. Organizers often emphasize that all skill levels are welcome, and sometimes even provide extra safety gear like helmets.
This skatepark serves as a testament to the Greenway's role in providing diverse recreational opportunities for the Boone community, extending beyond traditional walking and biking to embrace action sports and youth engagement.
