Some recent resurfacing work has caused temporary roughness, and fall brings leaves, but overall, it's a highly recommended destination for cycling and walking.
"Beautiful view along freshly paved bike trail almost 24 miles long that merges into C&O canal towpath if you want to do a longer ride"

"We ride a lot of Rail Trails including the GAP & C&O. I had heard the WMRT had been repaved and was nice so, we decided to try it. Oh what a treat! Beautiful scenery, you go deep into some gourges. The surface is super smooth. There will be some considerable leaves on the trail during fall. Parking at Big Pool was great. Very safe. Hancock is about the 1/2 way point. There is a great bike shop open 12 months a year. Plenty of eateries & places to stay. It's now one of our favorites. We will return before winter. Do it!."

"September 2, 2024: Happy Labor Day!
There were no good vibrations on the trail today. Park Authority is resurfacing the trail and the parts they have started work on are very rough. To be fair, the big bumps from the roots are gone and the actual resurfacing should start soon.
As for physicality of the ride, the vibrations from the resurfacing were worse on our arms and sit bones then aerobically (we sang "Think of Me" from "Phantom of the Opera"...)
Over all great level ride with no huge bumps and not a lot of riders/walkers out today!
Because of the vibes, we stopped at Handcock to walk around C&O Bikes and through town. We also picked apples to bring home from the park!"
