Kurt and I ventured out to Fort Frederick State Park this weekend to camp and tackle the Western Maryland Rail Trail. This is a roughly 25 mile out and back asphalt trail that includes a bit of a walk along the C&O Canal towpath that each of us had completed two times previously. Uncharacteristically, neither one of us checked on the conditions this year, and we found a good section of the trail c...

Western Maryland Rail Trail 🌲🚂🌳👟 🚗If you are traveling towards Western Maryland or even into West Virginia (or live near this area), this trail is not only beautiful but a great way to get energy out for you and your kids! We stopped here to have a snack, take a long walk and soak up the scenery instead of taking the generic “rest stop” approach. It was well worth it! 🌳The trail is nearly 28 mil...

This evening after work I went for a quick 4.8 mile push on the Western Maryland Rail Trail. This is a 28 mile trail that is completely paved. With the temperature around 95 degrees today I had the trail to myself. "We ride a lot of Rail Trails including the GAP & C&O. I had heard the WMRT had been repaved and was nice so, we decided to try it. Oh what a treat! Beautiful scenery, you go deep into some gourges. The surface is super smooth. There will be some considerable leaves on the trail during fall. Parking at Big Pool was great. Very safe. Hancock is about the 1/2 way point. There is a great bike shop open 12 months a year. Plenty of eateries & places to stay. It's now one of our favorites. We will return before winter. Do it!."

"September 2, 2024: Happy Labor Day!

There were no good vibrations on the trail today. Park Authority is resurfacing the trail and the parts they have started work on are very rough. To be fair, the big bumps from the roots are gone and the actual resurfacing should start soon.

As for physicality of the ride, the vibrations from the resurfacing were worse on our arms and sit bones then aerobically (we sang "Think of Me" from "Phantom of the Opera"...)

Over all great level ride with no huge bumps and not a lot of riders/walkers out today!

Because of the vibes, we stopped at Handcock to walk around C&O Bikes and through town. We also picked apples to bring home from the park!"
