What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Wild Horse Island State Park for its beautiful scenery and opportunities to see wildlife, particularly bighorn sheep and deer. The secluded nature, accessible only by boat, offers a peaceful hiking experience. However, some note that sightings of the island's namesake wild horses are infrequent, and the terrain can be quite hilly.
"We took a shuttle service out to see this island. As of now (August 2025), there are only 5 wild horses on the island so your chance of seeing them are highly unlikely. There are about 200 ram horns on the island and many deer. The island has a lot more hills on it than I expected. We were here late afternoon, so I knew I had to work for it if I wanted to see ramhorns as they would all be sleeping and on high ground. Be prepared to sweat and and to do lots of incline. I did find 3 rams, and about 20 deer, 2 of them being buck. A beautiful island on a beautiful lake."

"I love this place! With only boat access it makes for a calm and usually secluded place to come hike. It’s my girlfriends favorite place and we have gotten lucky and seen the horses on multiple occasions"
Chris Hurst
"Snorkel anywhere around this island, but the corner reefs are the best on the North side. Remember that the historical lake level (and erosion) predates Kerr Dam, down about 8 feet...look for neat terrain and rock feature there. Anchorage good in most coves, but read NOAA hourly wind maps for direction, esp. overnight. Skeeko Bay is always a safe bet, even with a Northerly.
