Visitors find the Paper Mill Village Covered Bridge a beautiful and historic stop, appreciating its Town Lattice Truss design and the scenic Waloomsac River setting. While some note restricted views of the mill and falls from the bridge itself, adventurous explorers can find unique perspectives by venturing underneath. It's a well-maintained piece of local history, perfect for a brief, reflective visit or as part of a larger scenic tour.

"A beautiful close-angle Town Lattice Truss build type with open eaves straddling the Waloomsac River in Bennington, VT. Built in 1889 next to its namesake paper mill. I am a big fan of what i refer to as 'car wash rails', the wooden rails that help to keep vehicles centered on a bridge and therefore avoid damage to the supporting truss work. This one was my wife's favorite on our bridge tour through the region, and there were many contenders. The competition was close."

"Just one of the covered bridges in VT worth driving through and to. Make the stop and check out the reading. There is a path down to the stream to walk to and check out the bridge from the water.

Be sure to check a couple of the other bridges near by and enjoy a wonderful drive though a delightful state."

"These bridges here in Bennington are well maintained and beautiful. We enjoyed the simple tour and reading the history for these bridges. The paper and grist mills history for this one is interesting. Just down the road is a waterfall that was quickly flowing while we were there. So pretty and calming. This is worth the stop for a simple moment of reflection on our history."

These structures, often built in the 19th century, served a vital purpose in protecting wooden bridge decks from the elements, extending their lifespan. The Town Lattice Truss design, seen here, is characterized by its crisscrossing diagonal planks, creating a strong and visually appealing framework. Visiting these bridges offers a tangible connection to the past and a glimpse into rural American engineering. TikTok

Many visitors embark on 'covered bridge tours' throughout Vermont, seeking out these historic gems. The Paper Mill Village Bridge, built in 1889, is a testament to this enduring architectural style. Its location straddling the Waloomsac River adds to its scenic appeal, especially when framed by the vibrant colors of autumn foliage. TikTok

While the primary function was practical, covered bridges have become iconic symbols of New England charm. They evoke a sense of nostalgia and offer a peaceful respite from modern life. The experience of driving or walking through one is often described as stepping back in time, making them a must-see for many travelers exploring Vermont. Reddit

Navigating Views and Access

While the Paper Mill Village Covered Bridge is a beautiful sight, accessing certain viewpoints requires a bit of local knowledge. Some visitors have noted that the ends of the bridge have been fenced in, limiting direct views of the adjacent waterfalls and the historic paper mill. This can be a point of disappointment for those expecting unobstructed vistas. Reddit

However, the spirit of exploration is rewarded. For those feeling adventurous, a 'duck walk' under the bridge on the west shore is recommended.
