What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the surreal and fascinating experience of exploring the Lava River Cave, calling it a unique subterranean hike. The consistent cool temperature and the mile-long lava tube are major highlights. However, some find the need for reservations and the uneven terrain to be minor drawbacks.
"Beautiful and surreal experience! The cave is 60 feet high at some places. If you buy the vehicle entry, then everyone in your vehicle can enter the cave, there is no separate ticket to purchase to enter the cave, just pay the few bucks for the vehicle entry. Highly recommend renting the lights. Our head lamp could barely illuminate the roof, where as the rental light could see it all. It is about 6 degrees Celsius, so quite cold. Friendly and informative ranger gives a run through for 5 minutes at the start and then you can tour the cave without a tour guide which was nice. Highly recommend this stop! Tickets are available to purchase at 7am the day before you want to enter."

"Such a cool cave. Literally cold, but also fascinating. You have to have a reservation to visit though. The staff are very helpful, and the stairway down isn't difficult, though the cave floor is uneven in places. The cold, quiet, and dark down there is something to experience, and you can learn some cool science too."

"Subterranean hike in a big cool dark natural tube. Bring a jacket and some lights. We had to reserve parking ahead of time. Their $7 lights for rent are super bright and the kids had fun with it. Not sure if we'd go again but was a great experience the 1st time."
