Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the surreal and fascinating experience of exploring the Lava River Cave, calling it a unique subterranean hike. The consistent cool temperature and the mile-long lava tube are major highlights. However, some find the need for reservations and the uneven terrain to be minor drawbacks.

"Beautiful and surreal experience! The cave is 60 feet high at some places. If you buy the vehicle entry, then everyone in your vehicle can enter the cave, there is no separate ticket to purchase to enter the cave, just pay the few bucks for the vehicle entry. Highly recommend renting the lights. Our head lamp could barely illuminate the roof, where as the rental light could see it all. It is about 6 degrees Celsius, so quite cold. Friendly and informative ranger gives a run through for 5 minutes at the start and then you can tour the cave without a tour guide which was nice. Highly recommend this stop! Tickets are available to purchase at 7am the day before you want to enter."

"Such a cool cave. Literally cold, but also fascinating. You have to have a reservation to visit though. The staff are very helpful, and the stairway down isn't difficult, though the cave floor is uneven in places. The cold, quiet, and dark down there is something to experience, and you can learn some cool science too."

"Subterranean hike in a big cool dark natural tube. Bring a jacket and some lights. We had to reserve parking ahead of time. Their $7 lights for rent are super bright and the kids had fun with it. Not sure if we'd go again but was a great experience the 1st time."

Geological Marvel: The Formation of Lava River Cave

The Lava River Cave is a testament to the powerful volcanic forces that shaped the region. Formed approximately 700,000 years ago, this mile-long cave is actually a lava tube. It was created when molten lava flowed from a volcanic vent. As the outer layers of the lava flow cooled and solidified, the still-molten lava beneath continued to flow, eventually draining out and leaving behind a hollow tube. This process is what makes it a unique geological feature, preserving a snapshot of ancient volcanic activity. Instagram

This natural phenomenon offers a rare glimpse into the Earth's fiery past. The cave's structure, with its smooth, undulating walls, tells the story of the flowing magma. It's a fascinating place for anyone interested in geology or simply awed by the power of nature. The cave is considered a 'frozen moment' in geological time, appearing much as it did shortly after its formation. Instagram

Exploring the Lava River Cave is like stepping back in time. The sheer scale and the evidence of intense heat and flow are palpable. It’s a reminder of the dynamic geological processes that continue to shape our planet. TikTok

Preparing for Your Underground Expedition

A successful visit to Lava River Cave hinges on proper preparation, especially regarding temperature and visibility. The cave's consistent 40°F (6°C) temperature means that even on a scorching summer day, you'll need to bundle up. Many visitors recommend wearing a warm jacket, hat, and gloves. Layers are your best friend here, allowing you to adjust if you get warm while walking. TikTokInstagram+1

Visibility is another critical factor. The cave is pitch black, and your phone's flashlight is simply not powerful enough to illuminate the vastness of the tube. It's strongly advised to bring at least two reliable light sources with fresh batteries, such as headlamps or sturdy flashlights. Alternatively, you can rent powerful lights at the cave entrance, which many visitors find to be a worthwhile investment for a better experience. TikTokInstagram

Finally, footwear is paramount. The cave floor is uneven, rocky, and can be slippery in places. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are highly recommended to prevent injuries and ensure a comfortable exploration. Instagram+1
