What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Afton Canyon is lauded for its stunning natural beauty and challenging off-road adventures, often compared to a 'mini Grand Canyon' with rich history. Visitors appreciate the rugged terrain, river crossings, and unique features like active train tracks. However, the lack of reliable freshwater and the need for high-clearance vehicles for certain areas are common considerations.
"Afton Canyon is beautiful, some cold the mini Grand Canyon but the truth is it's full of rich history.
From a historical trail where people escaped Midwest and entered California at the turn of the century uncovered wagons to the most popular train tracks in the country along with some of the best off-road adventures ever that offers river crossings, sand dunes, rock gardens and trailhead parking lots that lead to some of the greatest natural obstacles on planet earth including arches, caves, lava tubes and other natural beauties that must be seen in person"

"I always used to wonder what was on that side of the road when I was going to Vegas. It is a really cool place to spend a few days. You can use the campground and enjoy the area or go off roading passing the river twice. Note that you should only take a high clearance vehicle past the river crossing coming from the campground the first one is a bit shallower than the one under the train tracks your suv or civic will not make it. If you get past that there are canyons to explore the best one is spooky canyon which requires flashlights and both hands to climb. It is well worth it tho."

"One of our favorite offroading and hiking spots. The beginning (or end) of the Mojavi Trail. Has 2 decent water crossings and trails run next to and under the train tracks in spots. Has a pretty decent camping site as well. Truly a special place."
