The Sumpter Steam Locomotive ride is a popular highlight, offering scenic views and a nostalgic journey. Some note that beyond the main attractions, there isn't much else in terms of extensive amenities or services.
"Here rests the remnants of the Sumpter Valley Dredge #1.
It is located just off of highway #7 at the McEwen Train Depot and Museum.
If you look closely, you will see it in the dredge pond next to the railroad tracks for the Sumpter Steam Locomotive that runs from Sumpter to McEwen and back.
The mounds of tailings that are scattered across the western end of this valley were all created by one of these machines.
After it had processed its last load of gold, it was left where it rested in the shallow pond it had dug.
This is what is left of a testament to the technology of over a hundred years ago, and what a little ingenuity and determination could achieve if you figured out how to work smarter, not harder.
If you want to see one of these behemoths restored, stop by the Sumpter Dredge Natural Area and see one up close and personal.
As always, leave it better than you found it and enjoy 😉 😊."
