"Beautiful hike! Be prepared! The trail goes down steep so the way back up was pretty rough. Parking was hard to find and you’ll need a pass if you park in the lot. It’s a great hike to try at least once."

"Beautiful hike! There’s a good amount of shade, plenty of tranquil water sounds and features, and the waterfall area is lovely! Dog friendly, can get a little crowded, and just remember what goes down must come back up- so the incline at the end provides a great workout!! Will be on the rotation for sure."

Navigating the Sturtevant Falls Trail
The most significant aspect of this hike is the return trip. What goes down must come up, and the final quarter-mile back to the parking lot is a steep incline. This section provides a solid workout and can be challenging for those not accustomed to uphill climbs. Many hikers recommend taking your time and enjoying the views as you ascend.
For those looking for a slightly longer or different experience, some hikers mention exploring the 'horse trail' for a variation on the return journey. Always be prepared with adequate water, especially on warmer days, and be mindful of the trail conditions.
Parking and Access at Chantry Flats
It's important to be aware that a parking pass, such as an Adventure Pass, may be required for parking in the Chantry Flats lot. These passes are used to fund the maintenance and upkeep of national forest lands. You can often purchase these passes from local outdoor gear stores or sometimes on-site, but it's best to confirm current requirements and purchase options in advance to avoid any issues.
If parking at Chantry Flats is full, alternative parking options might be limited and could involve longer walks. Some visitors have noted that arriving later in the day might sometimes yield an open spot as others leave, but this is not guaranteed. Planning your visit around peak times is the most reliable strategy for a smooth entry.
Best Practices for Visiting Sturtevant Falls
Footwear is another key consideration. Given the trail's terrain, which can be rocky and sometimes damp, wearing water-resistant shoes with good grip is highly recommended. This will not only provide comfort but also enhance safety, especially on the steeper sections and near the water.
Finally, remember that Sturtevant Falls is a popular destination, and it can get crowded. While the trail offers shade, it's still a hike, so staying hydrated is crucial. Bringing ample water, especially for the uphill return, will ensure a more enjoyable experience.
