What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is an iconic, yet often intimidating, crossing. While many praise its scenic views and engineering marvel, its length and height can induce significant anxiety for some drivers. Traffic congestion is a common complaint, especially during peak times, but the bridge's design and electronic tolling aim to manage flow efficiently.
"Nice and smooth lanes both directions across the water. Scenic views of bay and the bridge itself. Constant traffic and congestion on the bridge, plan accordingly"
Todd Mendez
"We crossed this bridge about 4 times, the first was 5:30 pm on a Friday night in a severe thunderstorm and if anyone was wondering I do NOT recommend that! The other 3 times were wonderful experiences! The traffic flow on the northern bridge permits one lane to go the other direction if needed so do NOT drive in lanes with an x . Beautiful structure !"
Kelly Eileen
"A legendary icon of Maryland and often cited as the scariest bridge in America, the legacy of the bay bridge precedes it. The bridge itself is quiet tame, however depending on the weather you either get the prettiest views on the entire eastern shore, or the feeling that you're in the middle of the rapture. My main issues tend to fall in the civil design. Obviously I'm no civil engineer but there are many issues with how the bridge was set up (lane count for one) that come as a result of the original architects never envisioning modern traffic. One can expect up to a 2 hour wait leading up to it going eastward on a week day afternoon, however they've been attempting fixes to these issues such as closing late exits and at least once you finally get there you can (usually) enjoy the view. Below are some pictures taken on a dreary Tuesday afternoon after sitting in an hour of traffic."

Navigating the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel
Travelers often describe the CBBT as a unique experience, with some sections dipping underwater in tunnels. One TikTok user even mentioned a food stop within one of the tunnels! While it offers stunning views, some visitors find the length and the underwater tunnels to be a bit unnerving, especially in adverse weather conditions. It's important to note that the CBBT is a toll facility, and the cost is for both directions of travel.
For those interested in the engineering behind it, the CBBT ensures safety and security for navigation channels entering the Chesapeake Bay and the Norfolk Naval Station. It's a significant landmark and a crucial link for the region, offering a different, and arguably more dramatic, experience than its Maryland namesake.
Understanding Chesapeake Bay Bridge Traffic and Congestion
Many travelers report significant delays, especially on Fridays, weekends, and holidays. One review mentioned waiting up to two hours to cross eastbound on a weekday afternoon. Social media videos often capture the extensive queues leading up to the bridge. The Maryland Transportation Authority provides traffic camera information online, which can be a valuable tool for real-time updates.
To minimize your chances of getting stuck, planning your crossing during off-peak hours is highly recommended. Weekday mornings and late evenings are generally less congested. Even with traffic, the bridge itself is considered a beautiful structure, and the views can be a silver lining if you're patient.
The Psychological Impact: Fear of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge
This fear is so prevalent that some individuals actively seek ways to avoid driving it. This can include asking others to drive, planning routes that bypass it entirely (though this is often impractical for crossing the bay), or even looking into specialized services. The feeling of being trapped on a long, high structure over water is a common theme in discussions.
Despite the fear, many who have crossed report that the actual experience is less terrifying than anticipated, especially in good weather. The bridge is designed with safety in mind, and the swaying sensation is normal. For those who manage to overcome their apprehension, the reward is often a sense of accomplishment and the opportunity to witness beautiful bay views.
