Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Portage Glacier Cruise for its breathtaking views, informative crew, and unique opportunities to get close to glacial ice. The experience is highly recommended for its accessibility and the chance to witness Alaska's natural beauty, though some note that booking in advance is essential to avoid crowds.

"Highly recommend was worth it. Around an hour boat tour of portage lake and the glacier. The crew are very informative throughout the tour through the PA system. Both inside climate control and an outside top deck for optimal views. They offer plenty of good stops along way to get photos of the waterfalls and the glacier itself. Suitable for all ages. We choose the first tour at 10:30am and only had about 20 passengers along but next 2 tours the crew said was around 120 passengers. So maybe best to cooperate first tour if you are looking for less crowded experience. Highly recommend this tour."

"The Portage Glacier Cruise was absolutely amazing! The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable, making the trip both fun and informative. We got up close to a stunning glacial waterfall, which was a highlight of the experience. Everything was smooth, well organized, and breathtaking from start to finish. Highly recommend!"

"Amazing! Views of the glacier and mountains are great no matter where you are on the boat. The whole crew was super nice and the narration very informative and interesting. We were lucky enough to see a bear during our cruise, bring binoculars! We got our tickets online through their website but saw a couple people buy their tickets while they were in line to get to the boat, but not sure if these sell out but I recommend booking in advance just to make sure. 100% worth it."

The onboard crew provides engaging commentary, sharing insights into the glacier's history, geology, and the unique ecosystem of Portage Lake. It's a highly recommended excursion for those looking for a memorable encounter with Alaska's icy landscapes without a strenuous hike. InstagramReddit

Understanding Portage Glacier's Retreat

Portage Glacier, once a prominent feature extending much further down Portage Valley, has experienced significant glacial retreat over the past century. This phenomenon is a stark visual reminder of climate change and its impact on Alaska's iconic ice formations. While the glacier is still a breathtaking sight, its current terminus is much further inland than it was historically. TikTok

The cruise still offers a valuable perspective on this process. The crew often discusses the glacier's past extent and the factors contributing to its recession, providing an educational component to the scenic tour. Seeing the exposed rock and vegetation where ice once stood offers a tangible understanding of environmental changes. Reddit

Despite its retreat, Portage Glacier remains a powerful symbol of Alaska's glacial heritage. The cruise allows visitors to appreciate its current scale and beauty, while also serving as a poignant reminder of the dynamic nature of our planet's climate. The icebergs that calve from the glacier and float in Portage Lake are remnants of this ancient ice, offering a unique tactile experience for those on board. Reddit

Portage Pass Trail: A Hiking Alternative

For those who prefer to explore on foot, the Portage Pass Trail offers a rewarding hiking experience with stunning views of Portage Glacier and the surrounding valley. This out-and-back trail is approximately 4.5 miles roundtrip with a moderate elevation gain, making it accessible for many hikers. The trail begins near the tunnel entrance and winds its way up to a pass that overlooks the lake and glacier. TikTok

While the trail doesn't take you directly to the glacier's face, it provides elevated perspectives that many find spectacular. Hikers often report seeing wildlife and enjoying the rugged Alaskan scenery. It's a great option for those who want a more active way to experience the Portage Glacier area and are looking for day hikes in Alaska. TikTok

It's important to be prepared for changing weather conditions, even on a short hike. Wear sturdy hiking boots, bring layers of clothing, and carry water and snacks. The trail can be muddy or snowy depending on the season, so check conditions before you go. TikTok
