Shirley Long
"A trip aboard Alaska Railroad’s flagship train- the Denali Star- is AMAZING! The seats are comfortable and some windows in the Goldstar car made it easy to soak in the breathtaking views. I loved spending time outside in the viewing area. The whole process from ticketing to onboarding to getting luggage to our hotel stop in Denali was seamless! The depot has a coffee area, nice gift shop and plenty of seats for waiting passengers. Aboard the train there is food and the Goldstar option package meals were delicious. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful everywhere! Do we have a ten star option? I wish we did!"

"One of the coolest stops of my trip—even without taking the train. The station had a museum-like setup run by passionate veterans working on amazing projects. One was restoring vintage railcars for tourism, another building replica vehicles. The walls were filled with historic photos and posters. The real railcars were beautiful, and the service looked top-notch. A humbling, meaningful stop that deserves more attention—well worth visiting and supporting."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider shorter routes or day trips like the one to Spencer Glacier for families with younger children, as the full-day journeys might be long. Packing snacks and entertainment is always a good idea, though onboard dining is available. The novelty of train travel itself is often enough to keep kids entertained and create lasting memories.
💰 Budget Travelers
To save on food costs, consider packing your own snacks and drinks. Some travelers also opt for shorter routes or day trips that are less expensive than the longer cross-state journeys. Traveling during the shoulder seasons (spring or fall) can sometimes offer lower ticket prices compared to the peak summer months.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
For the best shots, aim for morning departures when the light is soft and dramatic. Be prepared for changing weather conditions by bringing a rain cover for your gear. Consider a zoom lens to capture distant wildlife and a wide-angle lens for sweeping vistas. The historic depots also offer unique photographic opportunities.
