Let’s climb another volcano! This is Amboy Crater, which last erupted around 10,000 years ago! Not as steep (nor deep) as Cinder Cone in Lassen, but great views from the top of the rim! #volcano #hike #California #AmboyCrater #wannabegeologist

Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by Amboy Crater's otherworldly volcanic landscape, describing it as a surreal and must-see desert destination. The hike to the rim offers breathtaking panoramic views, and the surrounding lava field is fascinating to explore. Many highlight its potential for incredible stargazing. However, the extreme desert heat, especially in summer, can make hiking challenging and requires significant preparation.

"Otherworldly volcano in the desert that makes for a surreal scene. It was 112° when we got there so not the right time for the 3 mi. hike, but a beautiful view from the observation deck. The lava flow goes on for miles in every direction, and we checked out the eastern edge by truck near the remnants of Bagdad. Will definitely come back here when it is hikeably cooler."

Dean H

"The earth is completely scorched in this crater, which gives really interesting views when you look at the horizon. There’s also heat warnings everywhere, if you intend to hike during the warmer parts of the year."

Matt B

"The hike to the crater's interior and crest takes about an hour round-trip from the parking lot. The crest is pretty dangerous so children are NOT recommended for this. Proper footwear and water are essential. Also, almost the entire area is covered in pumice so if you bring your dogs, ensure they're also in proper footwear!"
