"Lots to see here. We were limited on time so didn't take any tours but we walked around for about an hour. We also go there at closing time.
We parked below for a flat $10 fee (credit card only). Took the elevator up and we were underneath the plaza. Can get to everything from there protected from the weather or can go up to the street level and access the other buildings that way.
Love that there were great big artworks on the walls along the passageway."

The Architecture of Empire State Plaza
The design emphasizes a sense of order and scale, with vast open spaces, reflecting pools, and a carefully curated collection of public art. The buildings are interconnected by an underground concourse, allowing for weather-protected movement between offices, the convention center, the museum, and The Egg. This architectural vision was intended to symbolize the power and progress of New York State.
While lauded for its grandeur, the plaza's design has also drawn criticism for its scale and perceived austerity, with some finding it less inviting than more traditional urban centers. However, its unique aesthetic and the integration of art and public spaces make it a significant example of mid-20th-century civic architecture.
Art at the Empire State Plaza
Notable pieces include Lyman Kipp's 'Wild Rice,' a vibrant sculpture that has undergone conservation and restoration, and various abstract expressionist works. The art collection adds color, dynamism, and intellectual engagement to the otherwise monumental architecture. Visitors can discover these pieces as they explore the grounds, the concourse, and the State Museum.
Beyond the permanent collection, the plaza also hosts temporary art exhibitions and installations, further enriching the cultural landscape. The integration of art is a defining characteristic of the Empire State Plaza, making it not just a seat of government but also an open-air gallery.
Events and Activities
Throughout the warmer months and beyond, the plaza hosts numerous public events. These can include concerts, festivals such as Capital Pridefest, and cultural celebrations. The open spaces and iconic backdrop make it an ideal venue for large gatherings and community events.
Additionally, the presence of the New York State Museum and The Egg Performing Arts Center means there are always performances, exhibitions, and educational programs available, providing year-round entertainment and cultural enrichment for visitors.
