Reviews Summary

Visitors generally find Ysgyryd Fach a pleasant spot for a walk, offering good views over Abergavenny and towards the Black Mountains, especially at sunset. While not as challenging as nearby peaks, it provides a rewarding experience. Some note that recent tree planting may impact certain vistas, and dog owners should be mindful of stiles and grazing sheep.

"A nice place to walk, not as long or difficult a climb as the Skirrid Fawr or Sugar Loaf, but still affording excellent views over the town and out towards the Black Mountains. Various paths and tracks around the hill, as well as the direct path straight to the top. Unfortunately, recent planting of conifers means that some of the views will soon be restricted - but felling has left other areas clear so swings and roundabouts. There are several stiles which are not dog-friendly, and sheep often graze on the lower slopes, so dog-owners need to be aware."

Ed Farrell

"Mundane walk to the top, basically a fire road and enclosed tree-lined 'trail' and (don't know if I missed something) but absolutely no viewpoint whatsoever, everywhere obscured by trees."

Exploring the Trails of Ysgyryd Fach

Ysgyryd Fach, or Little Skirrid, offers a network of paths catering to various walking preferences. While a direct, fire-road-like path leads efficiently to the summit, numerous other tracks and trails meander around the hill. These offer a more varied experience, taking you through woodland and open slopes. Some visitors note that recent conifer planting has begun to impact certain viewpoints, but strategic felling has also opened up new vistas, creating a dynamic landscape for exploration. It’s worth taking the time to discover these different routes. Reddit

For those with dogs, it's important to note that several stiles on the hill are not easily navigable with canine companions. Additionally, sheep are often found grazing on the lower slopes, so keeping dogs under close control is essential for both their safety and the welfare of the livestock. Reddit The varied terrain means sturdy footwear is a must, especially after rain when paths can become muddy. Reddit

Despite some changes to the landscape, the primary draw remains the rewarding views. The summit provides excellent panoramas over Abergavenny and out towards the majestic Black Mountains.
