"At each step in you are more amazed by the stone works inside. It’s a lovely distraction, a quiet and peaceful place by the river shore.. and st no charge at all! Well worth the visit"

"A very interesting piece of history which is only a few minutes walk from the cathedral and in fact is located right next to the current estate of the Bishop.
Sadly as with time, parts of the site has now been secured off due to natural deterioration. But if you love history, I would suggest paying a quick visit to the ruins, the boards arounds the site can give you a good idea of what it was once like."

A Glimpse into Medieval Power
The castle played a role in significant historical moments, including being briefly fortified during turbulent times. However, its destruction in 1646 by order of Oliver Cromwell marked the end of its active life as a bishop's residence. While a new palace was built nearby after 1660, the original Wolvesey Castle was left to the elements, becoming the atmospheric ruins we see today.
Managed by English Heritage, the site offers a fascinating opportunity to connect with England's medieval past. The information boards and the downloadable audio tour provide valuable context, helping visitors visualize the palace as it once was and understand its historical importance.
Exploring the Ruins: What to Expect
While much of the structure has succumbed to time, the remaining walls and foundations offer a clear sense of the palace's layout and scale. Some sections have been secured due to natural deterioration, so it's important to respect any barriers. However, the accessible areas provide ample opportunity for exploration and imagination.
The peaceful riverside location adds to the charm of Wolvesey Castle. It's a tranquil spot for a walk, offering a quiet contrast to the bustling city centre. Many visitors find it a lovely distraction and a peaceful place to reflect on history.
