The Whipsnade Chalk Lion is a historically significant and visually striking landmark, often discovered unexpectedly. While its scale is impressive from afar, some visitors note it requires a visit to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo for a closer look and that it could benefit from maintenance. The story behind its creation and wartime camouflage adds to its intrigue.

"The Whipsnade White Lion is a large chalk hill figure located at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, completed in 1933. It was designed by RB Brook-Greaves and took two years to construct, requiring the removal of almost two acres of land to reveal the chalk. During World War II, the lion was covered with a black tarp to prevent it from being used by enemy aircraft for navigation.
Never knew it was here until we drove past, so had to do some research and found this out.
Nice story.

The Making of a Landmark

The Whipsnade Chalk Lion is a remarkable piece of landscape art, carved into the hillsides near ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. Completed in 1933, it was the brainchild of R.B. Brook-Greaves and took two years to create. The process involved removing approximately two acres of turf to expose the underlying chalk, resulting in a lion figure that is truly massive in scale. Its creation was a significant undertaking, showcasing a unique form of artistic expression integrated with the natural landscape. Reddit

During World War II, the lion served a dual purpose. To prevent it from being used as a navigational aid by enemy aircraft, it was deliberately covered with a black tarp. This wartime measure highlights the lion's prominence and its potential strategic significance, even as a landmark. More recently, there have been discussions and desires to relight the lion using solar-powered LEDs, reminiscent of past illuminations that made it visible from miles away at night. Reddit

While the lion is a historical monument, its upkeep requires ongoing attention. Some visitors have noted that the chalk figure is in need of refreshing and weeding, suggesting that its pristine appearance may not always be maintained. Nevertheless, its imposing presence and historical narrative continue to draw interest from those who pass by or visit the nearby zoo. Reddit
