We discovered this beauty while out cycling along the High Peak Trail. Leawood Pumphouse in full steam beside the Cromford Canal. Its pistons pumped and chimney puffed like it was 1849 all over again. We didn’t plan it, but what a moment to catch and there’s another Steam Day happening this weekend. This lovely corner near High Peak Junction inspires walks and cycles. For more inspiration, t...

Visitors are consistently impressed by the Leawood Pumphouse, especially when it's 'in steam', highlighting the power of the working beam engine and the dedication of the volunteers. While accessibility to the upper engine parts can be challenging due to steep stairs, the ground-level experience is highly rewarding. "Came upon this place purely out of chance on a walk, what a great place to see still working as it was all those years ago! Lovely staff clearly proud of their jobs! Handed my daughter a shovel to see how she managed to load the coal… then helped retrieve said coal from the floor in front of the open door ! 😄 think she needs a bit of practice! Thanks all! 🙂"

"I’ve visited the Derwent Valley several times now, but yesterday was finally able to “tick off” this UNESCO site, as every time I have been in the area the pump house has been closed (due to it only being open a few days per year). I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the black smoke coming out of its chimney, and I quickly turned my car around and parked up so I could go and take a closer look! To my amazement it was free to visit and two big ovens being constantly filled with coal. If you get a chance to visit this is easily one of the highlights to this world heritage site, so be sure not to miss it!"
