The final section of Walsall Canal that was closed after a toxic chemical spill last summer has now reopened. A part of the canal was initially closed after the spill in August, when about 4,000 litres (879 gallons) of sodium cyanide and other chemicals leaked into the water. #Walsall #WalsallCanal #CyanideSpill

Reviews Summary

The Walsall Canal presents a mixed picture, with its recent reopening after a chemical spill being a significant positive. While some visitors enjoy peaceful walks and wildlife spotting, others are dismayed by persistent litter and pollution, which detract from its potential beauty. The canal's future appeal hinges on continued environmental efforts and community engagement.

"The area around Bentley Green is still a disgrace. The plastic doll that was on a post (Ruby Tuesday) 3 years ago is still there...now just a doll head. There are mounds of filthy sacks of rubbish alongside the canal. The canal itself is choked with litter, plastic waste even a bike, and the bridges covered in graffiti.
It could be so beautiful. There are moorhens and Canada geese swimming in all this mess."

susan firth

"Canal is beautiful but littered by the residents of walsall. Usually stinks. I have seen dead fish in it on several occasions due to polutting water. If the water board and local authority pay more attention to its cleanliness. The canal will be a attraction of the Midlands."

Dr Iqtidar Cheema

"Nice walk, clean tidy canal with litter bins and seating, can walk all the way to Walsall from wednesbury. Enjoyable walk."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Environmental Recovery and Reopening

The Walsall Canal experienced a significant environmental challenge with a sodium cyanide spill in August of the previous year. This incident led to the closure of a section of the canal, impacting local wildlife and the community. Following the spill, extensive cleanup operations were undertaken by various agencies, partners, and volunteers, coordinated by organizations like the Canal & River Trust. The reopening of the canal, marked by events and the passage of the first barge, signifies a major step in its recovery and a return to its role as a vital waterway. TikTokInstagram+3

This recovery effort highlights the resilience of the canal ecosystem and the dedication of those involved in its restoration. While the reopening is a cause for celebration, it's also a reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship. Visitors can now experience the canal as it begins to thrive again, though awareness of its recent history is important for understanding its current state. TikTokInstagram

Community and Recreation

The Walsall Canal serves as a valuable recreational space for the local community. It's a popular spot for walking and cycling, offering miles of towpath to explore. The canal basin, in particular, acts as a central hub, sometimes hosting community events and launches, such as the introduction of the 'Sister Dora' canal barge aimed at maintaining the waterways' cleanliness. Instagram+1

However, the experience for recreational users can be varied. While some sections are described as well-maintained with amenities like litter bins and seating, others are unfortunately marred by litter and neglect. This inconsistency means visitors might encounter pristine stretches one moment and areas choked with rubbish the next. Despite these challenges, the canal continues to be a place where people connect with nature, spotting wildlife like moorhens and Canada geese. InstagramReddit
